    Hi Alison

I don't have a membership of British Newspaper Archives & rely on using it at the local library, but I think many other libraries should have it on free access if they have findmypast free.

Last time I looked at BNA you got three free downloads just for registering without paying a membership.

    Dear Alison,
Years ago, in 1994, a fellow researcher Herman Brulmans investigated the crash site of the Halifax in Rosmeer, Belgium. Herman was at that time in close contact with Harry Richards and Gordon Mellor, both passed away in the meantime.

FYI, the photo below was taken on September 1942 following the replacement of some of the crew members of the original Handley Page Halifax B. Mk.II. W1216, PM-Q (Queenie), who were retired for six months after completing their first operational tour before embarking on a second series of 30 flights.

Top row from left to right: Sergeant G. Green, Flight / Sergeant R. Stolz Page, Flight / Sergeant R. Hawthorn, Sergeant H. Richards, Warrant / Officer K. Edwards.
Bottom row from left to right: Flight / Sergeant D. MacDonald DFM, Sergeant D. Giddins and Sergeant N. McMaster. Photo was taken by Flight / Sergeant G. Mellor.

The picture with the house is the house in the village of Mopertingen (next to Rosmeer) where George Green crashed on the roof and lay in the rose garden.
    Best regards,
Corné Bijnens, local researcher from Mopertingen.

Thank you so much for this it is amazing I thought he was Sgt Green in another photo I saw but could not confirm - such a very sad end. I never knew my grandfathers sister but tried to contact her sons in Chester I believe Peter ran a pub but I think they have passed away now unsure as I tried several addresses to no avail. Thank you again for the information it is so appreciated.

Thank you I now have a copy of the account of this very sad event.
I would like to locate Sgt Green’s medals not for myself but to display somewhere alongside his story. His sister died in recent years age 91 Mabel Green in Edinburgh. I dnt know of other family who may have been given them. It is also possible his wife Irene received them. We are never likely to know this as my attempts at contacting her sons in Chester failed.

My great uncle was also killed on the same mission as Sgt Green. His name was Norman McMaster. I have been to the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincolnshire, where the names of those lost are memorialized. You will find Sgt. Green's name listed among those lost.
