Clement, do you use Facebook? You could probably post an appeal for information through one of Birmingham's newspapers. I've looked at the Birmingham Mail, but can see no email address, but they appear to have a Facebook page. It's always worth a try. I found cousins of mine in Doncaster using an appeal through the local newspapers. I think your English is superb by the way.

Thank you :ukflag[1]: Yes I use facebook (there's a page for the book I'm writing by the way, with a pic I posted about George Ross : http://www.facebook.com/tillvictory), but what do you suggest ? That I ask them if I can have some sort of advertising in their paper ?

    Hi Clement

I guess in this day and age of tags on web sites etc then if there is someone around who starts searching for info on George Ross they will come across your facebook page and hopefully the Ancestry family tree, and from those make contact.

There is not much more you can do except put the information out there and wait to see what (if anything) happens

    Well done so far

    TD

If George EE married Renee Lawrence in 1940 she would seem to have gone her own way by 1945 when George was back with his parents.

Despite the difference in her middle intial (M or N), the 1950 register for George EE possibly confirms his marriage to Hazel, however, she was not there in 1955, did they split as there is the following marriage:

Ross, Hazel NR marriage to Norman E Partridge Q3 1954 in Oxford, also

Partridge, Norah R, dob 24 Mar 1925, death registered Dec 1994 Cardiganshire

In 1954 Reginald Fernand Harry Ross (Chartered Surveyor) was granted Probate to administer the estate of James Thomas Bliss

London Gazette 1935 - 8th Bn R War R – Reginald Fernand Harry Ross promoted to 2nd Lt

Reginald Fernand Harry Ross received OBE in the 1980 Queen’s birthday honours. City Estates Officer, Birmingham City Council.

    Will keep hunting.

Thank you Tony ! I had found the information about Reginald working at the City Council, and among Maria's links (thank you Maria), there's the City Council's website. Maybe they will know something then ? Among the history groups, there's also the one for Hall Green, I will send them an email too, as it seems to be where the family lived.

What a progress in just 3 days ! You all did an amazing job !

Thank you Drew ! Very informative, thank you very much !

I have received the book today, History of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment by Cunliffe I had ordered thanks to your suggestions. Unfortunately, no pictures of Major Ross there, but he contributed to the Fourth chapter like you said. Also, he is mentioned twice, in the part about the D-Day landings when his ship was hit three times and the men had to jump on another wrecked ship to land, and about the day he was wounded: "A direct hit had been scored on B Company HQ, leaving only Major GEE Ross unwounded; and he was wounded in the arm by a mortar-bomb not long afterwards, though he stayed with his men for forty-eight hours, until evacuated to hospital."

On the same page, it is said that Major Ross personally witnessed Major Bundock's action, when he shot at the tiger with a PIAT. Speaking of Bundock and Ross, Staffsyeoman, anything new ?

I'm looking forward to reading the whole book, I am sure it will be very interesting and instructive.

Thank you for you help !

    Clément

PS : By the way, I am still waiting for news from the library in Birmingham that is in the VERY SAME STREET the Ross family used to live on (Stratford Road). The Birmingham City Council / Register Office doesn't have an information on where Major Ross is buried, and they redirected me to the Library of Birmingham I had already contacted... I have contacted the history groups also but they don't hold such archives. So, still keeping those fingers crossed ;)

    Hello everybody,

I'm back with some more news... Everything failed so far (the library in Birmingham, the city council where George's brother used to work, searching for his supposed son Peter G Ross...), but there was one thing I hadn't done yet : buying a copy of his death certificate from the General Register Office. There are a few pieces of information I didn't have :

He died on 10th April 1971 in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Edgbaston. He worked as a General Manager, Parks and Cemeteries Department (retired) and lived at 29 Alcester Road, Wooton Wawen, Stratford-on-Avon. The thing that interested me the most was the 4th part for "Maiden surname of woman who has married", but that part was left empty with just a stroke... And the name of the informant was his brother Reginald Fernand Harry Ross !

I have ordered his brother death certificate too, maybe there will be a name that will help me find his descendants !

    I'll keep you updated,

    Clément

Just received his brother's death certificate, Reginald Fernand Harry Ross was married to Katherine Mary Lowe Ross (nee Spencer), but it looks like they did not have a child : KATHERINE ROSS : Obituary

It looks like the only lead I have is Peter G Ross, but I found many in Birmingham... He should be 72 years old now, but maybe he changed names after his mother remarried (is it even possible ?). It may be in an obituary that was published when he died (sometime after april 10th 1971 near Stratford-on-Avon), but I don't know how I could access that... Frustrating... If anyone has an idea on how to reach his son, it would be fantastic !

    Thanks,

    Clément

It might be worth reading this website entry, The Friends of the Warwickshire Regiment Museum are active: Research Yes, there is a fee. Given your long-term work "Who Dares Wins", just ask. A friend knows one the Friends members, so in a moment I will ask him to direct that person to view this thread.

For those interested in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment actions in the campaigns in North West Europe (1944-45) and the Far East, see the attachment. I expect it will cover their time in Normandy.
