Hello , I have just been looking at my late father in law service records . He joined in 1931 and served 10yrs 138 days , serving in India , Palestine, Suez and Egypt , he was hospitalized short time twice { may have been malaria } . My wife is surprised that no medal is mentioned . He was a private throughout term . She asked if he would have fought Rommel ?
Anything to add would be appreciated , thanks
    Regards Alan

    Hi,

You really need to post his name, Battalion and regimental number so members can check pre war general service medal rolls to see if he is mentioned.

Might be best to post some pages from his service record that show the dates of his movements and places served.

In relation to his WW2 service he should at least have the 39/45 War Medal and may have an entitlement to Africa Star & 39/45 Star but dates and locations served will be the crucial determinant. Possibility that there is Defence Medal entitlement.

Having said all that your main line of enquiry ought to be to apply to Army Medal Office who will be the final arbiters of his eligibility. They will consult his service record.

Thank you , I don't have the records to hand at the moment but a few brief details are Arthur John Joseph Fish enlisted Port Talbot 1931 , very good character , think he was discharged para vii in 1942 and the document stamped 1943 . Hope that helps some .
    Regards

Not really enough to answer your query.....it’s when and where he served that is the required information.

Before I knew of this site or even the Army Records Office, I tried to trace my Gt Uncle who was with the Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regt (is this the same?) in WW1.
He lies in Northgate Cemetery Baghdad.
I found their Regimental Museum very helpful, they told me where and when he signed up and where he transferred from to join their 6 Btn along with a brief outline of their activities at that time
I am not sure if they could be so well informed regarding WW2 or if Covid has caused them problems.
It might be worth a try.

    Hi,

I’m assuming he served 2nd KORL from Sept 1939.

Edit - Wikipedia link removed and replaced by KORL Museum link.

    King's Own Royal Regiment Museum

The detail you have posted does not breakdown his personal location while he was posted to Middle East Forces June 1940/Jan 1942.

I am aware that you speak of him being discharged sick so I’m mindful of the possibility that he was absent from the Battalion sick at some time in that period.

The micro detail of his movements will be contained in his B103 forms which MOD usually provide.

If he was with his unit in MEF during the whole period as described above he would have an entitlement to 39/45 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal and War Medal but a prolonged absence out of the Middle East theatre of operations whilst sick would impact on the 39/45 Star and Defence Medal entitlement.

If he had applied for his medals post war there would be an Army Medal Office stamp on his records. If there isn’t one his NOK ought to apply as WW2 campaign medals are still being issued.

    Medals: campaigns, descriptions and eligibility

I can’t see any entitlement to a pre war GSM in the medal rolls on Ancestry.

    Hi,

The first B103 appears to suggest that he didn’t see any active service with his Battalion as outlined in the Battalion locations I posted in the link to the KORL Museum.

His 1940/42 service in the Middle East appears to be comprised lengthy periods in hospital and convalescence and on POW escort duties outside of the Middle East theatre of operations.

I’d suggest his medal entitlement may be limited to Africa Star and the War Medal.

Army Medal Office will consult his full service record - including his medical papers - before issuing his medals.

    Good Luck.

Excellent news Alan. Defence Medal entitlement is always the tricky one to predict. I think you will have received them in individual presentation boxes? That is an improvement on the small cardboard box that contained all the medals and ribbons and would’ve been despatched to the recipient in the immediate post war period.
