On september 24, 1944 the American 1st Lt Charles D. Crook, pilot of a B17, who was hiding avaiding captured since February 22, 1944, after his bomber crashed in the region of the Dutch city Wijk bij Duurstede, reported himself to a tankofficer in the Dutch village Deurne. (see the part of his intel debriefing report in the UK). His last hiding place with Undergroundpeople was some miles north of Deurne, in the village Bakel. I have reasons to think that he reported himself to an officer of the 23rd Hussars in the village Deurne. Next day, september 25th, Crook was already back in the UK. I suppose that there must be written something in a report or diary of the 23rd Hussars if suddenly an American officer in civilian clothes is making contact in the mid of a battle.
Charles D. Crook Crew http://www.303rdbg.com/MACR_2645.pdf Not sure if you have this. Flight plan (proposed and actual) for 303 Group, 360 Squadron for that mission. It also shows location of loss of aircraft during that mission
Thanks you, but I know that MACR. The cutout in my post comes from that MACR. There is not more about Deurne in it. So, I am searching now for something about him of september 24th, 1944 in diaries of the 23rd Hussars
Understood, but just posting what I find, in case you don’t have something? Sorry to disappoint but there is nothing relevant in the 23 Hussars War Diary (WO171/847) for 24 Sep 44. It's not a very detailed one I'm afraid. The Regimental History might be your next port of call. Regards Tom
