Norwegian War Decorations Arne Simenstad Awards to British Armed Forces 1940-1945 – Citation

This officer commanded Stavanger Zone which included Kristiansand Sub Zone. By his forethought and firm handling the surrender terms were put into effect in the shortest possible time and with the minimum of friction. The bearing and high standard of the troops under his command during their many successful raids on German concentration camps reflects the greatest credit on this officer. His administrative organisation was first class in spite of a very inadequate staff.

    LODER-SYMONDS, ROBERT GUY
    Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Robert Guy Loder-Symonds, Brigadier, Royal British Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy from 17 September 1944 to 25 September 1944, during the battle of Arnhem, Belgium. Brigadier Loder-Symonds' artillery arrangements during the battle were outstanding and the maximum possible use was made at all tines of the support available. When the medium artillery of the Second Army came within range, Brigadier Loder-Symonds directed their fire with such skill that medium shells were destroying the enemy within a few hundred yards of the British positions. The effect of this close-in medium support was so devastating that several enemy concentrations, forming for attack, were completely broken up and many dangerous situations were averted. Brigadier Loder-Symonds was constantly under fire. The leadership he displayed and his cheerfulness under difficult and dangerous conditions were outstanding at all times, and an example to those with whom he came in contact.

    Immediate

Sjt Appleby was commanding a troop of three 'I' Tanks and was the left troop of the leading Squadron in the attack on 'Tiger' on 21.11.1941. Two of his tanks blew up on a minefield, sustaining broken tracks and other local damage. The rest of the Squadron went on. This was at 0700 hrs. Throughout the day, the enemy made intermittent attacks with Infantry supported by artillery fire from the West. Small arms, mortar, and Molotov cocktails were used against him. He repulsed these attacks with the utmost energy and initiative, directing the fire of the immobile tanks, and manoeuvring the fit tank with considerable skill. During lulls, although continuously subjected to Artillery and M.G fire, he commenced the repair of the tanks, and by nightfall had completed them. He then took in tow another tank which he found damaged by a mine and led them all back within the Tobruk perimeter to the night leaguer and the unit. Sjt Appleby's initiative, drive and skill in fighting his troop although two tanks were immobile, and his devotion to duty in carrying out the repairs while most of the time the troop was under fire set an example of determination and courage which must rank highly in the service. He was acting as troop commander in place of an Officer, whose normal command it would be. LG 24.2.1942
