Hi, Could someone with the book that lists British Army POW's lookup 7,019,451 Robert McAdorey for me please and confirm his unit? Ancestry has POW records and previously had the same details as the book but for some reason they have cut back what information they show which is annoying as it was very useful - I have complained a couple of times and they have said they will look into it. I plan getting his POW questionnaire (if available) but just looking to get a head start. Thanks in advance Alistair
Alistair Shown as Army Air Corps - I'm at the Archives tomorrow so will se if there's a Lib Report JOhn
Thanks for that John, he was Parachute trained but I wasnt sure if he was still with an Airborne unit when captured - possibility of 2nd Batatlion at Arnhem was mentioned but I'm not sure on that - plus he seems to have been Irish and isnt mentioned in Brotherhood of the Cauldron. Fingers crossed he filled in a questionnaire and it survives Thanks again Alistair
Alistair He was with 6th Para when he was captured - Once I've downloaded today's pictures I'll post his POW Lib report John
Thanks again John, I did think the mention of the 2nd Battalion was a red herring, so good to clear it up - I wonder if he was captured on Operation Hasty time for more googling I think. Thanks Alistair
Would certainly seem to fit for dates etc - According to Otway about 50% of the party were casualties - POW etc John
Am looking through the bits on Paradata at the moment, it seems the Battalion were out of the line at the time, so looks like it must have been on Hasty - cant quite tie down the place of capture yet though. Paradata has pictures of the 60 men, plus some briefing pictures but only a few men are identified. I've just got hold of his Paybook so trying to find his story Thanks Alistair
Luco Dei Marsi is just North West of Trasacco and is By Avezzano and as the plan was basically to harrass the Germans between Sora and Avezzano, seems to back up his being on Operation Hasty at the time - I guess I have to add the War Diaries to my wants list. Alistair
Hello Chaps, This is from a book of names and addresses of associates of L/Sgt H Vies Suggit 5DG in Stalag 383: It is one of the last entries, which chimes with his being there from 5 Feb 45 (assuming a slip of the pen on his Debrief form) to 22 Apr 45. I hadn’t heard of Op HASTY before and thus far have only read this summary: Hasty (ii) | Operations & Codenames of WWII An interesting enterprise ... Suggit’s family have a few, mainly unannotated, photos (not great quality) taken in the days between the evacuation of the Camp and the arrival of the Americans, so I’ll have a look at the next opportunity, just in case a face and a name can be matched. Is there just a chance he could have worn a caubeen?
In theory he would be wearing a Red Beret but its possible he could have got separated from it but in that case I'd expect him to be bareheaded in any photos
According to his POW Liberation report, which has the same address, he was with 6th Parachute Battalion and captured at Trassaco, Italy 4/6/44. His dates in 383 correspond with Suggits after being moved from VIIA
Result. Photos herewith: Annotated: Stalag 383 - 21 April 1945 (Standing). Bob Walker, Bill Tear, Chas Elphick (Kneeling). Jim Dibble, Robert McAdorey Dibble and Tear “won the race to get home;” Chas Elphick came from Perth, Australia. Not annotated (but identifiable from above as Walker, McAdorey, Tear): I can see why his headwear may have been attributed as a caubeen; it is certainly worn like one. The capbadge is seemingly improvised - a para wings badge.
Brilliant pictures, it certainly looks like a Caubeen with the wide band and I'd agree about wings as a badge
