Hi John and welcome to the forum. Little more about both battalions of Queen's in Burma you can find here. for you probably is the most interested Chapter 5 which is about 2nd Queen's. Good luck with your research.

    Hi there,

I see that your fathers service record states that he "entered concessional area" meaning Burma in January 1944. This was when the 2nd Queens were embarking on their Chindit Expedition. In the section where your father was given his character description by his CO it does state he has served in India and Burma. In which case he would have been awarded the same medals in the picture above not just the war medal. For further reading on the 2nd Queens in Burma follow this link http://www.queensroyalsurreys.org.uk/ww2/burma/006.shtml

    John,

From what his service record says it would appear so, during the second Chindit Expidition the 2nd Queens certainly made contact with Japanese forces and suffered substantial losses during a Japanese attack at night. The Japanese drove I believe 3 lorry loads of infantry into the middle of the Queens harbour area, the queens were disorientated and lost around 70 troops. There will be lots of information on the link I sent you, my uncle served in 1st Queens in Burma and from what he said it was certainly an experience that you would never forget.

LRRA - Local Rate Ration Allowance. As a soldier is not being fed by his unit when on leave he is awarded an allowance to purchase food

Well done, John and thanks for getting back. It's nice to see that 'Bamboo' was spot-on in his assessment.

I probably should have said in my initial post that the service records aren't actually a 'medal card' and if the medals were not claimed originally, it's quite possible that no exercise was ever undertaken to summarize entitlements. If someone were to apply for a copy in the future then they ought to now be noted.

    John,

It would be great to see the medals when you have court mounted and had them engraved.
