    Roll of Honour for

    The Lincolnshire Regiment

    August 1939 – November 1946

    &

    The Royal Lincolnshire Regiment


    December 1946 - December 47

    (The Lincolnshire Regiment, became the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment in late 1946, so 16 men are commemorated by the CWGC and also honoured by that title).

    There are over 1,250 names who served with the Lincolns or attached to other units during WW2. (I apologise in advance for any omissions and mistakes).

    It is compiled in chronological order and where possible will have headstone photos and copies of documents/information from the following sources:-

    Commonwealth War Graves Commission (Casualty details)
    The National Archives (War Diaries & other documents)
    Lincoln Archives (Nominal Roll & Roll of Honour)
    Headstone photos provided by other members of this Forum and taken by myself, and downloaded from the internert and where possible, sources acknowledged.

    6 Battalions of the Lincolns served during WW2, 4 of which served as Infantry throughout. Overall, the Lincolns served in most Theatres of Operations. The 7th & 8th Battalions existed for a short time in the UK, before being converted to serve with the Royal Artillery. Other smaller units will also be mentioned in due course.

    When war broke out on 3rd September 1939, the battalions were in the following places:-

    1st Battalion – Nasiribad in Rajputana with one Company detached at Ahmedabad in the Bombay Presidency, India.
    2nd Battalion – Portland in Dorset, UK
    4th Battalion – Lincoln, UK
    6th Battalion – Grantham, UK

    North West Frontier of India, Burma, Malaya & Netherlands East Indies.

    (Converted to 102 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment on 1 December 1941)

    (Converted to 101 Anti-Tank Regiment on 22 December 1942, Disbanded August 1943)

    Grave Reference: Row 9. Grave 30.
    Cemetery: HERRINGTON (ST. CUTHBERT) CHURCHYARD
    Location: Durham
    Additional Information: Son of William and Adelaide Marsh, of Herrington; husband of Lily Marsh, of New Herrington.

    Cause of Death: Died as a result of an accident at Portland (Castle). Found dead in the moat, having apparently fallen from the top of the battlements. No witnesses to this incident. (Source – 2 Lincolns War Diary).

    4th October 1939 - Second Lincolns, having sailed from Southampton (UK) on the “Duke of Argyll” (3rd October), disembarked at Cherbourg, France, destination Tource en Charnie and joined the BEF.

    Enlisted in the Lincolns 6 April 1934.

    Additional Information: Son of Richard Evelyn and Flora Ethel Mitchell, of Whiteley Village, Surrey.

    London Gazette: Second Lieutenant 9th April 1938.

    Cause of Death: Death caused by the explosion of an Anti-Tank mine at the Corps Junior Leaders School. (Source – 2 Lincolns War Diary).

    Cemetery: NOTTINGHAM NORTHERN CEMETERY

    Cause of Death: Killed at Grimsby. Part of a section returning from night operations. Whilst marching in the gutter, was hit by a Corporation Bus and died instantly. (Source – 6 Lincolns War Diary).

    War Diary of 4 Lincolns

    12th April 1940 – 4 Lincolns board the “Empress of Australia” at Gourock in Scotland and are issued with Arctic Kit.
    15th April 1940 – At sea, 4 Lincolns are told their destination, which is Namsos in Norway.
    16th April 1940 – Land at Namsos during harassing air actions.

    War Diary of 6 Lincolns

    2 April 1940 – Prepare for possible move overseas.

    Cause of Death: Killed in action, but date of death given as 11 May 1940. (Source – Lincoln's Nominal Roll). 4 Lincolns had been evacuated back to Scotland by that date. Further investigation required. Lincoln's Roll of Honour has the same date as CWGC.

    There is a newspaper report from the Grantham Journal 24th May 1940 about Ronald Stanley Smith and 3 other Grantham pals of the Lincoln's.
