Just a thought. This is a great collection and I would like to draw two points together. Mena probably refers to Mena House Hotel in Cairo which is close to Heliopolis aerodrome, the old British Airways Repair Unit before the war. It was taken over by the RAF for the duration of the war. Heliopolis and Mena were also safe areas to be in to hold a conference. About 90% of the residents were French, employed on the Suez Canal and the Railway. Attached are two of my favourite photos, the 6LAA battery outside Mena House Hotel and the same battery putting up a defensive barrage (40mm Bofors) at Heliopolis.

Just looked at the second picture, I have a couple of pictures like that, searchlights in the air, need to get them posted as well soon.
I think your grandfather is more likely to be RAF Regiment looking at the pictures. He may have been dutied at some point to be Provost Staff which is like the Military Police, but is at garrison/camp or unit level only. The RAF Police wear white covers over their caps hence the name 'Snow drops'. Not being a RAF expert I would think the above would apply back then as it does today. Do you know what the Service Police actually done, I noticed he was also stationed at the Police HQ. Im rather confused with all this. Thankss James
I imagine that the RAF Police were similar to the other forces and your father would have been locally appointed within the Squadron for the purposes of security and keeping order within the unit. Regards Tom
Hi James, I think you may need a RAF expert on that one. I know RAF Police is the current name and whether they were called Service Police back then I don't know. However I would guess that if they worked similiar to the Army. You have a Military Police that is a regiment within the Army structure and locally regiments will have Provost staff which are a kind of Police/Guard only in that regiment. They would be a tradesman first and provost staff second which is what Tom has said. That kind of ties in with his title of 'Aircrafthand/Service Police'. I'd get it confirmed by a 'Crab Air' nut though Cheers Andy
