Does anyone know how many british generals were captured during WW2? Was just searching the pow list on ancestry.co.uk and saw three listed under P!
To my knowledge the following british generals, who held the rank of local, acting, temporary or substantive Major-General and above at the time, were POWs during the war. I have organised them af the nation holding them. A * indicates that they suceed in escaping. Germany: Major-General Sir Victor Morven Fortune (1883-1949) Italy: Lieutenant-General Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart (1880-1963)* Major-General Michael Denman Gambier-Parry (1891-1976)* Lieutenant-General Sir Philip Neame (1888-1978) * General Sir Richard Nugent O'Connor (1889-1981)* Japan: Major-General Merton Beckwith-Smith (1890-1942) Major-General George Alfred Duncan Harvey (1882-1957) Lieutenant-General Sir Lewis Macclesfield Heath (1885-1954) Major-General Berthold Wells Key (1895-1986) Major-General Ian Macpherson Macrae (1882-1956) Major-General Christopher Michael Maltby (1891-1980) Lieutenant-General Arthur Ernest Percival (1887-1966) Major-General Frank Keith Simmons (1888-1952) Major-General Hervey Degge Wilmot Sitwell (1896-1973) An addittional number of Brigadiers were POWs: 27

Tasker I was fooled by this at first, think you will find that a lot of OR's have their Rank listed as General. Certainly a lot of my look ups for RA Gunners are listed as General. Chris
Major-General Sir Victor Morven Fortune (1883-1949) The now forum-famous photo of me standing in for General Fortune & my daughter as Rommel on this thread.... http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/1940/11864-st-valery-en-caux-1940-2007-a.html

You've lost me there - what do you mean by this? Below is a screen shot of the POW entry on ancestory.co.uk for my Grandfather. As you will see his Rank is listed as General, which he certainly was not, being a Gunner, could be quite confusing Chris
Ah, looks liked dear old Ancestry has c**ked up again; they did that with Soldiers Died for WW1, showing thousands of men killed in 'Aldershot' for some reason!
Thanks for clearing that one up fella's, must admit that I was totally taken in by that cock up....well done ancestry.co.uk
