    Owen -- --- -.. MOD

From Algiers to Austria by Cyril Ray the 78th Div history pages 36 & 37.

January 3 saw the first of the new ''limited'' attacks made by 36 Brigade on Green Hill and Bald Hill- the dominating positions ten miles short of Mateur, that they had come to know so well two months before.
...The plan was for the Buffs , with a parachute company , to take Green Hill, while a commando was to take Bald Hill; the Royal West Kents were in Reserve.
The Buffs went into the attack- under a thirty gun barrage from 132 Field Regiment and 456 Light Battery - in a night of rain , and at dawn they were still on the lower slopes , being heavily and accurately machine gunned. They held on through the day while the parachutists took the summit - only to be driven off again . Meanwhile the fight for Bald Hill had taken a similar course : the commando took it , lost it, and took it again .
We had to withdraw, and by January 5 we were back at our original position.
