Some help please. My father was with the RAMC Field Ambulance attached to the 8th Army (Sherwood Foresters) and severed in the North African and Italian campaign. I have a number of photographs he took during his time in the army but one has long puzzled me. It is of an uniform soldier, looks like it is in North Africa, but the uniform does not look British. May be I'm wrong, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I zoomed in and he appears to be a Major (slip on rank slides at the shoulder straps of the shirt); he's wearing a tie - officers only according to dress regulations of the time - and he seems to be wearing a coloured sidehat. It could be RAMC, but given he's standing by a sign designating A Company, he could be the Company Commander of an infantry battalion. The shovel could be a reflection of what my uncle passed as desert soldier wisdom; "When you see a man, carrying a shovel over his shoulder going up the blue (into the desert) whistling, ask him not where or why he is going..." But I think he is definitely a British or Commonwealth officer.

Phil thanks for your help. All the photo's I have of my Dad in the desert shows him and the friends 'casually' dressed so this person sticks out. Thanks again.
