Just trawling through the dustier parts of my favourites list and re-found this: http://www.nortfort.ru/np/index_e.html Click on 'Bridge head' to start scrolling through some excellent shots, including a complete KV1 being dragged from the river after 60+ years.
Quarter of a million in two years in a piece of land 2 and a half by half a mile in two years. Two thousand four hundred a week. You would think a significant memorial would commemorate it. It is probably because it is eclipsed by it's nearness to Leningrad
Good link VP. Family holiday to Russia soon for you then? He's mentioned that he is will be mainly holidaying in Scarborough.
Just had another look and found it on GoogleEarth too. All part of my education on Eastern Front. Nevskij*Bridge-head > Plan
They also brought out a T 28 . Nevskij*Bridge-head > T-38 tank 1 Good underwater photos of it. Äàéâèíã â Ïåòåðáóðãå, Îòêðûòîå ìîðå ::: Ïîäâîäíûå ñúåìêè òàíêà Ò-38 That is being used as a memorial I think. I liked this T 26 just left there Nevskij*Bridge-head > Bridge-head 15
Some amazing stuff on that website. Makes you realise how little we know about the Eastern Front. This was one of my favourite photos:
Battles around Leningrad were among the most bloody ones... I think several millions of our soldiers lays there....
Some new uploads to Youtube. Seen much of 'em before, and could have put 'em on the swamp tanks thread, but I'm pretty comfortable these are Nevskij vehicles, so:
A friend of mine live in St Petersburg and is friends with some members of a Poisk (Search) Group. New Page 5 These are pictures from an excavation they did in the Nevsky Pyatachok.
And the burial
New Page 5 Good website too. Google translate stutters on the frame version, but this seems entirely usable & readable: Google Translate - 73 omsb site map
Thank you for the heads up, Adam. Time to give these bones a proper burial. The Field of Honour is honourable enough, but a proper cemitery is even better.
There is a memorial on the Nevsky site. It's centered on a refurbished T34/85 tank. To find it you need to follow the road which runs parallel to the river on the South bank. The memorial is on the Western side of the battlefield more or less on the old Russian front line.
The Battles around Nevsky Pyatachok were some of the most savage of the war as were many of the Battles of Army Group North around the Volkov /Wolchow in almost WW1 like conditions , as the Front did not move great distances many of these Battles did not recieve the same amount of publicity as the Great Strategic Battles in central and Southern Russia across vast trascts of Land. I have been to Nevsky Pyatachok a couple of times , it is a very intersting Battlefield to visit as are many on the Leningrad Front !! There are still many Armoured vehicles to be recovered from this swampy region. The quality of the excavation work by the Poisk group is tro be commended. cheers Paul
Having just read Clive thread on discovering a Soviet soldier remains & being able to ID him I thought I'd bump this thread for those who may not have seen it before. I find this fascinating .
I have been involved in many conflict Archaeology excavations in Estonia under the supervison and authority of the Volksbund and Russian war graves , many groups are now working across the old Eastern Front.
I visited this site in July 2021. There are still many items laying around the former battlefield and being taken from the river bed. The battlefield itself is now overgrown with wild flowers. But if you are brave enough and go off the paved road, you can walk along the defence line at the river embankment. Many of the former trenches are still visible and mixed with various memorials. I attached 2 pictures I hope are of interest. The first are trenches by the river bank and the second and some relics by a memorial.
