I was last there in 2001 , previous to that it was 1988 or there abouts.
In 1988 the Mosquito was in a shed just about long enough to accomadate her, the Halifax rebuild project was still in sections, its engines not attached .

2001 the hanger full but not orgainsed.

Enjoyed seeing the photos Owen , a museum which is a success story , good to see. :):)

Was there two or three times during my language study in 2001. Great place to visit. Visited Beverley Army Transport Museum (closed now for ever), Eden Camp and many other nice places around York. Saw D-Day show in YAM.
Well done, lads. I enjoyed every single day.

    Hi GB, Welcome aboard.
Used to love Beverley as a kid, particularly the Beverley itself you could clamber all over.
The collection seems to turn up all over the shop now, though I see the Beverley did find a new home:
The Blackburn Beverley Association - Beverley XB259
Interesting, I'd never heard of Fort paull,
    Fort Paull : Home
Seems to be a new setup - might be worth a shufti on my way up North later this year:

I saw the Brown sign to it on my last trip up to Spurn Head. I will make the effort, and have a look next time.

Sorry to hear about Beverley closing. I have fond recollections of climbing inside the Beverley aircraft just like Adam.

Glad to hear that it is still in one piece and an exhibit somewhere else.

One of the things I like about YAM is that it's a working museum - there are enthusiasts maintaining or restoring several aircraft all around the museum...

On the day I visited I was lucky enough to see the Mosquito night fighter stripped down for an overhaul!

It was a rare opportunity to get a good look at the insides of the beasty!

The Rolls Royce Merlin - and it's cleaner than our car's engine! :D

One nice place to stop off is the beautiful Chapel...

It was a wonderful day out for the wife and I, and I will be off back again this summer...

Some more from Elvington photos , first time I saw the Mosquito she was fuselage only wings leaning against a wall.
The "Halifax" was a nose section , unrestored fuselage and a tail section with turret.

As from next Tuesday - weather permitting - it will also have a Nimrod MR2, until last Wednesday, the world's premier maritime patrol aircraft.

I believe that the intention is to keep it in working condition and taxy it up and down the runway.

Saw you bringing the beast down at Elvington on BBC Look North.

Pity that the fuill event was restricted to the touchdown on the threshold of the runway.

If I heard it correctly, the report quoted the cost of the Nimrod as 400 million pounds each.Surprising how confused some are with decimal points.

Previous reports indicated that the YAM were hoping to keep it flying which must have required a large budget. As it is, I hear that civilian maintenance specialists from Linton will take care of it to keep it in good ground condition for taxying.

Not strictly to do with Elvington, but since you mentioned the Nimrod, and since I found an RAF yearbook from 1984 that covered the introduction of the Mk3 I thought you might like to see the pages.
I wonder what happened to all the other aircraft types that they hoped would carry the SkyGuardian....

I have another yearbook from 1980 that has some info on the Mk2 if that is of interest to anyone?
[edit] Aha... just looked and it doesnt give the Mk2 much of a mention, just about the retiring of the Shackleton and the soon to be introduced Mk3... guess that introduction took a little longer than expected, then!

Sorry about the bad photography but I have not got a scanner available!

As see it the Nimrod conversion into a maritime platform was solely determined if the problems that Marconi had with the radar equipment could be resolved to the satifaction of the RAF.

I think at one time there was suggestion that the Marconi contract would be cancelled. It was a long drawn out affair to arrive at the aircraft role that the RAF had initially specified.

We went for the first time this weekend and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is and Jacob loved it. They are currently looking to build another hangar to house more aircraft. Anyone interested in the RAF it's well worth a visit. It's a shame you can't get into anything though - I'd happily pay a few quid to sit in a Tornado cockpit.

    Andy,

Nice photographs and I can see that it has come on leaps and bounds from when I last visited around 2001 and there was an Avro Anson undergoing restoration.
