Haven't seen next weeks TV listings yet but I spoke with Major Tony Hibbert this morning and he said the programme that he is in will be broadcast on ITV this coming Sunday at 2000....it covers some 'great escapes' of WW2 and Pegasus 1 in October 1944 is one of those looked at....... The good Major is still soldering on at the age of 94 and in 1944 was Brigade Major of 1st Parachute Brigade...

Niall It's 20:00 on Sunday ITV - a one hour programme covering a number of escapes and is presented by David Jason. John
Only watched Major Tony Hibbert in a doco last night (that I saw mentioned on the forum somewhere) - Al Murray's Road to Berlin.... Sprightly chap and told his story well
As I said the Major is 94 and still full of beans and lots of ideas....I have trouble keeping up...his story is most interesting if you ever get the chance to hear the full 5 hour version..not only the fighting at the bridge but his escape at Brummen and his remorse at those that were killed as a result and the time at Ede hiding and then Pegasus 1.......I feel there is a book in there somewhere on Tony!
AM You're forgetting him capturing Kiel for which he subsequently received an award - from the Germans!! John
Just watched the programe, very good I thought, especially interesting for me was Major Tony Hibbert part, what a gentleman, I had the pleasure, and indeed priviledge of sharing a meal with him at my home not to long ago, he related his Arnhem story to my wife, including the escape episode, and the sad consequences, but failed to mention Kiel and his action there, an action described as avoiding the third world war starting before the second had ended, and avoiding the likely loss of many many more lives. AM---- I would love the opportunity to hear the five hour version, I could listen to Major Hibbert for a week, however I am made up to have been able to spend the time I have with him, regards lofty
Always, always fascinating to listen to veterans accounts of their time in WW2. An enjoyable program and well presented by David Jason. I don't think I could have worked in those tunnels, too claustrophobic for me I'm afraid. I did hear that there is another series planned about Escapes, but not by a large TV company. This would cover all theatres of WW2 and all types of escapes, not just from a POW perspective. We need to keep our eyes peeled for that one too.
Thought it was a good programme, I'd never heard of that extenable ladder escape before. What got me was how good that 97 year old RAF vet was - I'll probably not even reach 60.
Hi All, Just saw it online great and more like it, and yes did like the Tony Hibbert can anyone tell me where that memorial is.. If its not to far will get a few photos Tom
