There is apparently a new Czech made film about the siege of Tobruk in post production as I type! Due for release in September. I hope we get to see it. There is a Czech language page about it.. http://www.ceskatelevize.cz/specialy/tobruk/fotogalerie.php with some screen shots and the like, it looks very good. Here's hoping. Bod
I was curious if this film ever materialised. Well it did. I hope that it makes it to British TV soon. HBO seems to be a 'partner' of some sort, maybe it will make it to the US first. Tobruk Edit:Czechs in North Africa
I do recall seeing an Italian film of how the Italian army won the battle of El Alamein - the same one that allegedly Monty and the 8th army claimed to have won also ! so I trust the translation of this film will enlarge on how an Czeck battalion fared at Tobruk after coming through the German occupied areas of Hungary - Roumaina - Bulgaria and Yugoslavia to Palestine prior to sailing off to Liverpool in the obviously returning empty Mauretania. I seem to learn more history every day ! Cheers
Ha Ha call me suspicious, but is that a touch of cynicism? I didn't note any cynicism in that at all.................yeah right.

When he would meet Australian officers after El Alamein and they did not have the 9th badge on their uniform, he would say - "You were not with the 9th then"? and proceed to ignore them. Would be a little embarrassing don't you think!
Lets see what its like first before making conclusions!! To be honest the battles around Tobruk would make a great story.
Spidge - Monty thought a great deal of the 6th Australians also - but they didn't fight under him as they were in Palestine and Syria when El Alamein was on...the 9th did a fantastic job at Alamein as did the 6th from their introduction at the Tummers - Rommel had never seen anything like them later on....rifles were like air guns in their hands ! GH - didn't make any conclusions - just thinking out loud really - the battles around Tobruk would indeed make great films especially at Sidi Rizegh when Brig.Jock Campbell won his V.C. and the cauldron at Gazala -these were touched on in "Desert Victory" but could use a re-make- without Hollywood's revisions - just hope this one doesn't turn into another Italian "epic" as that tale need to be brought forth for the younger generation....... Cheers
I will just be happy for the film to portray events that actually happened without fantacising too much. Tom
Czech cinema has a good track record, and the website makes this look like a good production. They seem to have gone to the trouble of getting a lot of detail right. Let's hope for a DVD release in 2009!

Cheers Hi Tom, The 17th brigade of the 6th was in the Syrian campaign however the 21st and 25th Brigades were of the 7th division. The 7th was often called the forgotten division. The 18th brigade fought with the 9th division in the defence of Tobruk April-November 1941.
Alex has given me the heads up on this Czech movie that came out in 2008. It looks rather good. YouTube - Tobruk (2008) trailer Tobruk (2008)
Owen - bet this movie doesn;t beat the Italain one which shows how the Italian Army beat the heck out of the 8th Army at El Alamein - I never saw the ending as I was rolling on the floor helpless ! Cheers

Cheers Reminds me of the website that offered everything you need to know about North Africa in ww2. Only mentioned Tobruk in 1942, omitted the Australian 9th and 7th division etc etc. The New Zealand medical corps got a guernsey though.
I watched Tobruk last night and found it to be quite good really... Well made, and all in all very impressive - I recommend it. Besides, Owen, you'll like the hats...
Oh, wanted to make the thread and found that Owen did it already - then I join it and adding to the topic that movie isn't really action-or-something-like-that, don't expect saving rhyan etc. I watched only 30 mins and rathe like it EDIT: btw, how did Czechslovaks get there? (some good link would be appreciated).
