I noticed this whilst on a long weekend visit to the WW1 Somme battlefields recently. The plaque is in the tiny hamlet of Courcelles au Bois about 50 metres from our lodgings.
Enquiries to our host brought the story that the chap killed one of the German occupiers of the hamlet, the Germans then rounded up the locals onto the local boule pitch threatening to shoot them if the perpetrator wasn`t found. The chap tried to make a break for it from a house nearby and was shot by the Germans in mid flight. The plaque marks the spot where he fell.
