Wait! That appears to be Australian. As part of the centenary of ANZAC, Australian children wrote on crosses that were laud on their behalf. This appears to be one of them. I can't think how it came to be exactly there.

It would be intersting to find out though. As you said in another message there could be a link with the school. How could we find out?

Can anyone make out the name of the school? It looks like Menden - the closest I can think of is either Minden in QLD or Mentone in Victoria

Dave I have checked another photo that I took and it is Meriden Junior school. The name of the young lady is Laura Hall. As I live not far from the site I would love to find out as I say like to find out if there is a connection with any of the crew and if so I would like to be in touch with that school and act as form of liaison between the school and local historians here as I know a few of them. I also know the people who found the aircraft and could get photos of what was found.

I just looked them up as I hadn't heard of Meriden - turns out it's in Sydney's inner suburbs at Strathfield. I might try calling them on Monday.

Dave, thank you, that would be great...

I got in touch with the school, and I have passed on a copy of the photo of the cross as found. Here is their response:

Thank you for your contact regarding the wooden memorial cross decorated by Lara Hall. In 2014, Year 6 Meriden girls attended an excursion at the War Memorial in Canberra, where they decorated wooden crosses that were to be distributed throughout the world. I believe this may have been linked to the centenary of ANZAC day. As far as I know, the distribution was random and there is no particular reason why Lara’s cross came to be in France. We have also discovered that some of the girls’ crosses were sent to Indonesia.

Thank you for your interest in this project. Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything further you would like to know.

Dave, have you got any contact details for the school. I would like to set up a link with them s that if they decide to any form of projects etc then there is a link. For me it is important that I help to keep the flame of memorial burning. After all, these guys deserve to be remembered.

I sent a thank you note to the school describing where the cross was placed and mentioned the Australian connection with the RAAF fatality.

Hopefully I will get another response but I used my military email address and I won't get to see any reply for a few days as I am out of the office at the moment.

Can I get your email address via a PM so I can forward on their responses.
