Can you photograph your local war memorial? (UK)

Sad to see so many names appearing in both the WW1 and WW2 rolls on this memorial.

 

It is indeed mate.

I was interested to see whether some of those with the same names were from the same family so I had a look at CWGC, but could find links between just two of the shared names, the Whittle and Kenway lads.

Interestingly, although Sergeant Edwin Whittle was clearly a Dorset lad, he served with the 2nd Canadian Rifles Battalion. Corporal Sydney Whittle was his younger brother, given both men’s listed parents. Ironically, both died aged 27, about 18 months apart.

I can find only one Stephen Whittle but there are no details on CWGC to help link him to Sydney and Edwin. The only Sergeant Joseph A. Whittle I can find there served with the 50th Battalion, Australian Infantry and, again, has no other information shown to link him to his namesakes.

I’m pretty sure that Privates Jack and Herbert Kenway were also brothers given their parents lived at “West Walls” Wareham. They, like the Whittle brothers, were also the same age when they lost their lives, both just 20 years old, Herbert in 1915, Jack in 1917.

17028 Pte Charles Pettingale, 17029 Pte Harold Pell and 17030 Pte David Hudson were both killed on the first day of the Somme in 1916. All three served with 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment and note their consecutive service numbers. Charles was just 18, Harold 24 and David 20. One wonders if they were mates or were they simply just queued up together?

Although Pte Pell’s parents’ address is shown on CWGC as Witham on the Hill in Lincolnshire, given his service number in relation to Charles and David, surely this is him?

From the attached video about the 11th Battalion I learned that of the 850 men who started the attack that day, 691 were killed, wounded or missing. There are no words…

Charles’s brother, 58241 Pte Ernest Pettingale, Northamptonshire Regt, was killed in 1918, also aged just 18.

15726 Cpl George Biggs, MGC, was 22 when he lost his life in 1917 and his brother R/1030 AB Charles Biggs, RNVR, just 20. George is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres.

Footballers celebrate 38 years of French twinning - LymeOnline

On the way to Creully, one of the first villages to be liberated on D-Day, they stopped at Douvre la Delivrande, twinned with Axminster, to meet their hosts.
THIRTY eight years of friendship in sport was celebrated last weekend when members of Lyme Regis Football Club travelled across the channel to their twin club, US Creully/Commes in Normandy.

After a lot of searching, I have now found images of the Whipps Cross War Memorial.
This includes a dedication to the 59th (The Essex Regt) HAA Regiment RA.

Originally located in Walthamstow, this monument was moved in the 1950s to Whipps Cross, just outside the Territorial Army Barracks, Lea Bridge Road, Greater London (E17 3PA).

As my late dad was born 100 years ago (and died 25 years ago) I doubt that many, if any, of dads comrades in the 59th HAA Regiment are still alive. So we are pretty much left with just their legacy and this memorial...



I love the message at the base of this memorial...
