Just read a note in a German book about this organization and the immigrated German social democrat Jupp Kappius.
    True story or fake ?

Apparently a German TV channel (WDR) did a documentary about Kappius and his US wife .sometimes after the war. Some hard liner German viewers felt negative about his actions during the war. I do not understand this attitude. I will try to find a copy somewhere tovarify it.

A brief passing reference to (an unnamed) Jupp Kappius and the method of his delivery into Germany here Stefan (n.b. Jupp Kappius exited conveying aircraft at around midnight on 1st September 1944 and date of his drop can often be found recorded as 2nd September).

It's an old book published in 1988 when much was still under wraps.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

Amazing, what you have been digging out Jim.
I have to ask my research friend Jochen up in the Emsland, what he knows about this man/story.

Operation Downend was a joint OSS/SOE operation. It was originally proposed by OSS Labor desk and they took responsibility for the recruitment of agents. SOE German section provided the agent training and infiltration.

Kappius was dropped in by air on the night of 1st/2nd September 1944. Another agent named Kirstein was infiltrated into Germany from Switzerland at the end of 1944. He was immediately picked up by the Gestapo and sentenced to death. However, he was liberated from prison by advancing Allied troops before the death sentence was carried out.

    Lee,
this is getting more interesting with each post. Ever since I was a guest in Arsaigh House I am fascinated about the SOE actions. Stefan.
