Abbreviations on Service Record

Discussion in 'British Army Units - Others' started by Stuart Cameron, Jun 18, 2021.

  1. Hi, I'm hoping that someone may be able to help.
I recently obtained my late Father's service details but am having difficulty with the many abbreviations. Three in particular have me stumped at present and I have attached a copy of that page of the record.
As you will see, on the 18/5/45, he was posted from the Y list to " this unit ". The unit looks like " 8 JHB " and there are similar entries in the 'unit' column below. Can anyone tell me what they stand for?
Hope someone can be of assistance, thanks.

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

It’s actually “& TOS” meaning “and taken on strength”.

Is Stuart referring to 8 IHB? As it appears between postings and after the Y list is it 8 Infantry Holding Battalion?

  4. Thanks Steve

  6. Yes Tony. This is the one I was having trouble with. Infantry Holding Battalion makes sense, thanks.

  9. There's a lot of great info out there and I wonder if anyone happens to know the location of '8 IHB' in May/June 1945. That would clear up another little mystery for me. I have found a picture taken on the 9th May 45 of Dad wearing his Black Watch uniform in Peasholm Park ,Scarborough and don't know what he was doin in that area at the time.
