English Channel sea battles, June 1940
During the night of 12/13 June, 11,059 troops were evacuated from Le Havre; 9000 of them were taken to Cherbourg.

Might add to earlier posts - makes one wonder where the other 2059 troops went if not Cherbourg

Winser lists the sailings from Le Harve, I see that some went to Southampton and others to Portsmouth, but they don't seem to add up to over two thousand. Off for an eye op shortly, as soon as I can see properly after that I will post the sailings.

It was other postings that mentioned Le Havre and Cherbourg and that someones relative picked up at Le Havre was then taken to St Nazaire before heading back to the UK - but maybe I'm reading it incorrectly

It doesnt need all the sailing unless the original poster needs to find the ship his relative sailed on

    Thanks for the thought

Good luck with the eye operation

According to Winser 12,393 were taken from Le Havre to Cherbourg and only 351 to Portsmouth. The other Cycle sailings to the UK set off from St Valery. The only ship that I know who went along the north French coast and then St Nazaire or Brest was the City of Bath. She was OHMS and her movement card does not list this voyage - but the passages listed on the card are incorrect, according to Lloyds List. There may well have been others, OHMS sailing along the coast.

Thank you for posting these absolutely amazing photos. I just went through the entire thread, and it was page after page of the best photos I've ever seen of Dunkirk. I've even saved this thread so I can go back and browse through it again :)

Thanks Craig, i use AI software and then tweak it. It converts B&W photos by seeing the different shades of black and adding colour for that shade, i do have some original german colour slides but they cost a lot to buy.
I can put up the B&W photos with the colour ones.

Keith, I think that putting the original up alongside is really useful. We all 'see' different colours when viewing black and white.

Hi Roy thank you for the infomation regarding which ships sailed to st nazaire from le harve it was my post were i said my father was lifted from le harve on 13 june after holding the line as a member of arcforce its possible that the ship he is seen on in the photo may of been The city of bath as my father came from liverpool so he may of known it was a Ellerman Lines ship with its home port being liverpool i am unsure if the photo of him and his mate freddie on board a ship if that photo was taken in le harve or if it was taken in cherbourg harbour (some listings say the photo was taken in cherbourg other listings say it was taken in le harve ) i do know he and his mate freddie were part of arcforce at that time arcforce had been holding the line at le harve and got away from le harve on a ship on the 13 june along with other members of arc force as thats the date given for the the photograph they are both in was taken , not sure if the ship from le harve took them first to cherbourg and then went on to st nazaire or if they got on another ship at cherburg which then took them to st nazaire or if the ship from le harve just sailed straight to st nazrire i do know they ended up st nazarie as they both saw the lancastra sink, once they got home they were both ordered not to speak to the press or to anyone else about the sinking of the lancastria.

Hi Pete, As you can gather it was something of a shambles. The Establishment have always done their best to ignore (kindest word I can think of!) Aerial and the other two evacuations that took place after Dunkirk. So much so that some troops who were evacuated from Le Havre ended up believing that they had escaped through Dunkirk.
