That sums up the situation pretty well. After the fall of the Third Reich there were no Nazis about as a late friend of mine who became as a young army conscript as part of the British occupational forces in the summer of 1945 declared as such.

However the assessment from the main dissidents for expected support to overthrow the regime from the general public was negative. Generally the population remained faithful to the regime and its indoctrination or at the best were passive to the end.

I remember the father of the new Germany, Konrad Adenauer's struggle in the 1950s with the past in trying to contain the illegal reunions of the Waffen SS...."afterall they were just soldiers as were the Wehrmacht" was one of his contentious approaches to reduce the tension.

Admittedly, the regime in the GDR was not made up of noble philanthropists either - but with this they gleefully put salt in the West's stinging wound:

    BRAUNBUCH
KRIEGS- UND NAZIVERBRECHER IN DER BUNDESREPUBLIK UND IN WESTBERLIN
    STAAT • WIRTSCHAFT • VERWALTUNG • ARMEE • JUSTIZ • WISSENSCHAFT

"In the old Federal Republic, the volume was long considered political pornography. Of course it was propaganda, in a few exceptional cases even forgeries, but the Braunbuch was not a thoughtless work of fiction. On the contrary, its empirical basis proved to be extremely consistent, the error rate was well below one per cent. This distinguished the agitprop book from countless historical reference works.

The main objection that can be raised against the Brown Book today is that it mentioned too few names. Precisely because of the compact abundance of respected West German addresses, it also unintentionally created the illusion that all those not named had had little or nothing to do with National Socialism. There could be no question of that, as the research of the past decades has shown."

Again, in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung I read about this bit of history , totally unknown to me so far.

This group was lead by two young students:
    Hans Leipelt ( 18 July 1921 - 1945 and
    Marie-Louise Schultze-Jahn (1918-2010)

Is that history story known by any members? I have it in German only
    Stefan.

the family of Hans Leipelt were Protestants, but his mother Katharina was considered by the Nazis Jewish. Her mother was already killed in January 1943 in Theresienstadt. Hans fought in France and Poland, which did not help his case.
For both Hans Leipelt and Marie-Luise Jahn the judges wanted the death penalty. The lawyer of Jahn however argued that the Arien girl was seduced by this Jew. This trick worked for Marie-Luise. Hans was executed. RIP Hans

    "SHOW NOTES
Norman Ohler joined me on the pod to discuss two remarkable lovers who led Germany's resistance against the Nazis. Harro Schulze-Boysen and Libertas Haas-Heye led a complex network of antifascists, which operated across Berlin's bohemian underworld. They infiltrated German intelligence leaked Nazi battle plans to the Allies, including the details of Hitler's surprise attack on the Soviet Union. But in a world where friend could be indistinguishable from foe, nothing could prepare Libertas and Harro for the ultimate betrayals they would suffer."

The Hamburg group became known the Hamburg White Rose group by the Gestapo and had connections with Munich group insofar as they carried on distributing the last anti Third Reich propaganda flyer of the Munich White Rose after it had been eliminated. The Gestapo were soon clamping down on Hamburg dissidents, leading to arrests. After Peoples’ Courts trials, the majority were executed early in1945.

The Encyclopedia of German Resistance to the Nazi Movement covers the two group’s activities and downfall.......Edited by Wolfgang Benz and Walter H Peble, it should be available in German.

    Thanks Harry,
I think many Germans are not aware of this Hamburg group. Some may not want to know.

    Weisse Rose and Kurt Huber

I am not sure the participation of Prof. Kurt Huber has already been addressed.
He was executed on 13th July 1943.
His son, Wolfgang Huber, born 1939 was only four when his father died.
In an interview for a local newspaper Wolfgang also talks about his family, school time near Munich and university studies in Munich and Swansea/Wales.

I could roughly translate the interview, if of interest
    Stefan.

It was Huber who drafted the leaflet which the Scholls and others circulated at the University of Munich where he was a Professor of Philosophy and Psychology.

A man of tremendous moral courage whose leaflet declared, "In the name of German youth we demand of Adolf Hitler that he return to us the personal freedom which is the most valuable possession of each German, and of which he has cheated us in the lowest personal manner"

Thanks Stefan for reminding us of the deeds of such people.

    Very true Harry.
If you could see the pictures of Kurt 1943 and his son Wolfgang today, the looks are so similar.
And Wolfgang speaks to young audiences about what are the first signs of political danger in Germany

Today I received the permission from the newspaper to translate and post it here.
I have also received the phone number of his son and had a good talk with him today.
Translation done, waiting for the OK from Wolfgang.

Unfortunately, the journalist insisted to have my translation removed again.
I hope, I managed to edit my thread to this weird request.
After all, it was the translation only.
If any member missed the translation, please send me a PM.
    Sorry for this,
    Stefan.
