Because they came from Antwerp, headed east towards Peer and then moved North along the Peel following the line of the River Maas.

  3. I now know my Trooper died in Veulen, and have the map of how they got there starting in Normandy. Thanks again!.

What did you find to show that? Did you have the exact location?

Ernest Bentley was in C Squadron. Ron Cox who was also in C Sqn mentions him briefly in his unpublished memoirs.

Excellent info. I wonder if there’s anything regarding the fight for Wavreille in the Ardennes in support of 7 Para in that book? Or indeed if you have anything (and willing to share) about that action?

C Squadron 2FFY around 1942/43. Not a great photo but Ernest is in the back row, 11th from the left.

The 2FFY weren't involved in that fighting. They were supporting 13th Para in the fighting around Bure and Chapel Hill

Happy to help. My grandad was with A Sqn 2FFY from 1939-45 so I'm glad the graves of his fallen comrades are being well looked after.

The other fatalities that day all appear to have been from B Sqn.
Tprs Roy Robinson, Fred Taylor and Douglas Ashworth were all in the same B Sqn tank crew. Cpt Roger Gregory who had only joined the Regiment on 18/09/44 and Tpr Harry Baxter were also B Sqn. I'm unsure about Tpr Roy Barker but as he was initially buried alongside Gregory and Baxter I assume he was B Sqn as well.

Lt J McGregor who the war diary notes was injured that day was C Sqn so it's possible he was involved in the incident when Ernest Bentley was killed.

According to the Graves Concentration Report Form. Ernest was initially buried alongside Tprs Ashworth, Robinson and Taylor at Overloon. However according to the attached account from Roy Robinsons brother he and his crew were buried in temporary graves on the Croyman farm near Venray. It seems strange that they would be moved from Venray to Overloon and then back to Venray.

  14. Great to have the account of Roy Robinsons brother! That move to Overloon and back to Venray has me puzzled too, but Venray only became a War Cementary in December 1946, two years afther they died. Trp Roy Barker is here in Venray too, all the 2ndFFY men are burried in the same row. Just visited and took mental photo.

Excellent, many thanks for that. With regards to chapel hill, do you know where that is exactly and what it’s significance was?
