Not encountered that problem before Roy but I note that you can use the upload_2021-1-7_12-58-15.png tool to change the format if you encounter the problem again.

Thanks Richelieu, I know how I did it - originally I worked on MS Office, then I went to Open Office, then back to Office. Obviously a mistake, at one point or other!

There's a Cutty Sark listed on the June 18th entry. It wasn't the clipper was it?

    Adam,
No that was down with the Worcsester at that time - I think! This Cutty Sark was a motor yacht taken over by the Navy so HMS Cutty Sark.

The Navy requisitioned a number of large motor yachts. My favourite was HMS Maid Marion (Captain J C J Soutter RN (Ret)), which was escorting the tramp ship Alderpool carrying over 3,000 Polish troops from France. Alderpool ran out of food and water, and, despite several messages to the Admiralty advising them of the situation, Capt Soutter was ordered to escort her to Liverpool. another day and a half away. Capt Soutter told the Admiralty that he was taking his charge into Falmouth and was hastily ordered into Plymouth. Only a retired officer could do that, no need to worry about his 'prospects'. Fine officer. Captain Tom Valentine, the Master of the Alderpool was on of twenty or so Masters and others awarded the Polish Cross of Valour

    Hi Roy,
Great resources - keep them coming.
Just a correction - It was Tom Valentine Frank who was Master of ALDERPOOL he was later lost when ASHBY was sunk in November 1941.

Thanks Hugh, I looked at the list that I extracted from the London Gazette and missed his surname. Sad that he was lost little more than a year later.
