Hi, trying to find out a bit more about what my grandad went through,he didn't talk much about the war, I knew he was in Burma so I've got a few photos I can post of him and other members of the battalion. I found this which shows his rank etc but wondered what a sigs NQ boy did? Can't upload as too big?
If anyone would like me to post the Burma photos then please let me know. Thank you.

    Julia,
The 9th York’s and Lancs served in the Arakan region of Burma in 1942/43 with the 25th Indian Infantry Division. After this they continued to take on the Japanese in southern Burma until the enemy were all but expelled from the country.

The role was to deny the Japanese full use of the Burma coastal plain. There was constant small scale action and a few 'set pieces' involving devolved sub units. Similar places as the famous Major Tom Moore of 9 DWR /146 RAC!

    Hi Julia
My father also served in 9Y&L in India and Burma, I know a good deal about what went on 1943-45 and I'm waiting for Covid restrictions to end so that I can look through the battalion war diaries for India and Burma at the National Archives in Kew.

I will be writing an account of the battalion in India/Burma once I've seen the diaries. You are, of course, very welcome to have a copy when I eventually finish it. There is also some information on 9Y&L in the Rotherham museum archives, including a few photos. There are a couple of films of 9Y&L in Burma in the Imperial War Museum archives. I can give you the details for all of these if you want them.

I would really love to see the photos you have from Burma please. I can't see them posted in the thread here?

That would be fantastic please Julia. I will send you a private conversation message with my e-mail address and details; it's site policy not to put addresses on the open forum pages.

I very much look forward to the photos. My father was with 9Y&L from May 1942, arriving in India via South Africa September 1942, in various locations/training bases in India until February 1944 and then going into the Arakan in Burma and pushing south into Malaya, where he was present for the Japanese surrender. He remained in Malaya until 1946. I'm sure he would have known your grandfather!

There are several photos from India/Burma of 9Y&L in Rotherham archives, many with names attached. I'm looking to get copies.

AMPHIBIOUS LANDING IN THE ARAKAN AT RU-YWA [Allocated Title] is a film of the 9Y&L taking part in an amphibious landing at Ru-Ywa in Arakan

IWM also has film of 9Y&L holed up in the monsoon in August 1944, but this is not available on line at the moment.

Let me know if there's anything you might want to know about 9Y&L movements etc.

Please look out for my message, I really can't wait to see the photos.

    All the best Simon

    Hi All,

I was given the attached pdf by forum member sol a few years ago. I'm sure he will not mind me placing up here on the off chance it will be of use to those interested in the 25th Indian Infantry Division.

A few words on how wonderfully this thread has progressed for me, and hence how good this forum is.

Julia (above) and I are in conversation about her grandfather and my father in 9Y&L in India and Burma. Best so far is a photo Julia sent me which has my father and her grandfather standing together as part of the same platoon. Fantastic.

Good to hear about your progress Simon. One of my maternal Great Uncles was with either the 8th or 9th Yorks & Lancs in the Arakan. I am still waiting to send off for his service records to find out for sure, but will wait until everything has calmed down post Covid.

Thanks - I've managed to collect a few dozen names/ranks from 9Y&L through my research, so if you PM me your relative's name and rank there's an outside chance I might be able to confirm if he was 9Y&L.

Very happy to do that for you, send me a private conversation message with your email address and I will start forwarding them to you. Juliacox provided most of them but I will forward them to you directly..

Do you have much/any information about 9Y&L in Burma? I'm researching it as deeply as possible from the existing sources, but anything you can provide me with would be much appreciated. As with Julia above, I will send you a copy of the write up when I finally finish it (Covid is the main limiting factor as I can't get to the archives right now).

Thank you. I'm very grateful. I will send you a message. I am just starting to research. I have my grandfathers records and I'm doing a lot of reading at the moment. I'm happy to share anything interesting that I find.

Here's a photo of a platoon from 9Y&L, presumably taken during 1943 whilst training in India before going into Arakan early in 1944.

The green circle is my father, the blue circle is Juliacox grandfather. Standing next to each other, and all thanks to this forum. Amazing!
