What I find very interesting is the successful use of the Anti Tank rifles.
So many reports write them of as not much use.
    Certainly not in this case.

You are welcome Leanne - I have more files and books on the Buffs purely for their involvement in France during 1940. Why not start a thread on your grandad with any pictures and info in the 1940 section of the forum regarding his time in France before Dunkirk and I'll add to it.

Bryan - Over the years I've read mixed reports on the anti-tank rifle. I can only put it down to the type of armour each unit was facing at the time, but all referred to by the men on the ground as 'Tanks'. There was quite a range from Mk I's to Mark IV's in 1940 from thin to thick armour.

I've only just stumbled across this site and thread: I was searching on line for references to Lt Col E. H. Allen of the Buffs. My particular interest is in the officers who had served during the First War and who then continued either to serve, or have an active connection with the regiment during the inter-war years. (It takes all sorts, you understand).

    E. H. Allen was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Buffs in 1914 and served until retirement in 1948. I am wondering where you found this wonderful account, which although it’s not my specific area of interest represents the actual words and experiences of one of the men I am researching?
    Best wishes
    John

I too have just stumbled across this amazing resource.
I am researching William Edward Harkness. Captured in Arras May 1940 and sent to POW camp in Poland XX1A AND XX1B.
Any information would be really helpful.
