Capt. J.L. Johnston and Gnr. G.S. Fisher | Canadian War Cemetery, Adegem

Commonwealth War Graves Commission rectified 2 changes to their database after informing them about my findings.

Investigating the service records of Gunner Gordon Sinclair Fisher shows that Gordon transferred from 19 Fld Regt to 23 Fld Regt, Royal Canadian Artillery on August 29, 1944 (After he was miner wounded on August 21, 1944). The headstone doesn't need to be replaced.

Investigating the service records of Captain John Lloyd Johnston shows that he was Mentioned in Dispatches. The headstone doesn't need to be replaced.

    October 5th, 1944

From Warpath (The Story of the Algonquin Regiment):

"The 5th of October was a very heavy day offensively for the unit. Although nothing more tangible than casualties (and these were heavy) resulted, here is the tally of operations for an 18 hour period:

    1. A three-company attack on Isabella Polder. Nil results. Beaten off with heavy fire of all kinds.
    2. A two-platoon attack by "C" Coy. again, no good results.
    3. A one-platoon attack by "B" Coy, assisted by a "Wasp" section under Sgt. Bob McWhirter. Still no prisoners.
    4. Three reconnaissance patrols, one of which lost two men.

Doubtless that day the papers reported "Light patrol activity" on the Breskens front. It certainly depended on how one looked at it. Our total casualties for the day amounted to twenty-eight."
