58134 Brigadier 'Jack' John Edward Stracey STONE, CBE, MiD, East Lancs & 1 South Lancs

    Hi everyone
    I’m a newcomer and am researching my late uncle Jack Brig J E S Stone CBE.
    Jack was commissioned into the East Lancs but landed with the S Lans on Sword Beach as 2i/c taking command when the C.O was killed shortly after landing . Jack was himself wounded on the 27th?
    He was back with the East Lancs by wars end as a GOS2 On Mountbatten’s staff temp Lt Col OBE.
    Any help or suggestions re filling the gaps would be great

    Welcome aboard Chris.

    If you have not done so already, then you may want to send off for your uncle’s service records. If these applications do not cover officers’ records then apologies and I’m sure someone will be along to correct me :D

    Get a copy of military service records

    You could also start a thread here Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy where forum members will add further (sound advice given to me by Clive, who I have quoted here, when I first joined the forum).

    Again, assuming you’ve not already had a good look around, enter South Lancs and East Lancs in the forum search engine and you’ll find plenty to assist research, e.g.

    1st East Lancs Regiment 1939-45

    The Regiments’ War Diaries, held at the National Archives, will, of course, provide you with much information too and there may well be a member or two here who already has copies that may be of interest to you. This thread has the South Lancs diary for June ‘44 which I’m sure you will find of great interest:

    Thanks guys some great advice and info didn’t realise he’d been awarded an MID as well whilst with SEAC
    His eldest brother my grandad was also awarded an MID earlier in the war for his actions on HMS Capetown following her being torpedoed!

    Very interesting to read all this and to see that Chris Stone has been looking at it. I am one of Jack Stone's three daughters.

    Hi Jenny
    I’m the eldest son of your cousin Bernard ( son of Ernest) who sadly is no longer with us.
    Jack always took a keen interest in my career and mum Maureen, still alive and kicking, always speaks hIghly of him.
    I have been researching the family’s military history so it’s not lost to future generations of the family. My nephew is serving in the RAF making him the 5th generation to serve.
    Would love to stay in touch if that is OK?
