Welcome to the site Joe. Was your grandfather a Kirkcaldy man? There's a birth there in 1918 and his service return from 1940 is available at Scotlandspeople.gov.uk

The article I talked of you'll be able to access by signing up to Findmypasts 14 free day trial. If you don't to use it after this period, ensure you remove the tick from the automatic renew subscription option before your 14 days runs out.

Rare name Horsburgh here in Scotland. Got one in my family tree somewhere.

Sure they would have known one another. Did your grandfather return from the war?

Yes they were together when your grandfather died. My grandfather was a marksman . After Al died they were getting pressure from the Germans and retreated back to St Valerie where they were captured and kept in prisoner of war camps. He returned after the war to Dundee. He said he always felt great sadness seeing your grandmother and then your mum and her sister knowing they would not meet their dad. He died in 1986. But my dad knows most of his stories from the war

This is my grandfather Private James Gordon of the Black Watch ( standing on the right) and his brother John Gordon of the Black Watch (sitting) both fought and were captured at St Valery and taken to Stalag XXA. Both survived the war and returned to Dundee. I have their service numbers and PoW numbers.

For info. There was Kirkcaldy man Andrew Page Hutchison born in 1920. He won the MM in Normandy in 1944 with the Gordons
