I am looking into a DCM won by Sgt WS Taylor 1 A&SH .its an immediate award for his action in attacking a Machine Gun Post at Pt 744 in Italy on the 7th October 1944,the citation says East of Marradi. Can anyone advise where Pt744 was in the map ,or what it means ? Thanks for reading this
From One More River - a possible "The 19th Brigade pushed forward, but bad weather delayed operations until October 7th, when 1st Argvll and Sutherland Highlanders captured Monte Cavallara. Thus the battle for the Apennine passages began...." best wishes
Very good. That looks like the place. I have been hunting on the British Newspaper Archive in the hope of finding a photo of Sgt Taylor but theres nothing so far. Thanks for the input
Thanks for posting the relevant pages of the battalion history ,and pointing out Sgt Taylors part in the particular action Much appreciated
Hi all, This is my first post here. I'm Pietro, 25 years old. I live near Florence on the Gothic Line and I'm doing my master in History at the Alma Mater University in Bologna. I collect WWII documents related to my area. In my research I found your wonderful website. I'm researching on this document a Wehrpass of a german soldier: Josef Roeck, Grenadier-Regiment 578. He was killed in action «Point 606, 1,5km west from Badia della Valle due an headshot», which is more or less Monte Cavallara area. Do you have major information about this Point? Is there something about this Point 606 on the Bataillon diares? Thanks in advance and greetings from Italy, Pietro
Then, from an US Army map. In red the Points which are more or less 606 Meters, along the ridges of Monte Cavallara. And Cavallare (a farmhose) which is 604 Meters. Thanks again Pietro
The date in the wehrpass says 7th October 1944. The wehrpass also says 1.5km north, not west. Incidentally there have been a load of original German maps of northern Italy for sale recently.
Yes, sorry. It was KIA on October 7th 1944. I thought it was "west", thanks Gary. It could be Monte Casalino (666 Meters), maybe the clerk made a mistake? The US Army Map and the German maps are based on the same italian maps of Istituto Geografico Militare (IGM) of Florence. I have several maps of the IGM, unfortunately not from the area of Marradi. Greetings from Italy Pietro
What is the scale of the map you have posted? Is it 1:25000, 1:50000? I do have most of 1 A&SH WDs but not for this month. Next time I am down in Kew I will get them to see what map is referenced - unless someone already knows.
This one is 1:50.000. I know that the German used 1:25.000. Unfortunately I don't know, which maps used the British Army in such operation. http://legacy.lib.utexas.edu/maps/ams/italy_50k/txu-pclmaps-oclc-6540719-marradi-99-iii.jpg I used the this websites during my research on Poggio Prefetto battle (September 1944). The "Coordinates Translator" It helped me with the translation of the coordinates used in the Royal Scots diares. It would be very nice, thanks Gary!
Hallo Gary, a german speaker read the Wehrpass, it's (for him) nordw., wich is "north-west". So it could be the Cavallara area (not the Cavallara Hill). It has some points between 604-608 meters. What do you think? It's more or less 1,5km nw from Badia della Valle. Greetings from Italy Pietro
