    Hi all
I recently applied for two of my uncles service records, I got Next Of Kin permission for both of them. My question is will I receive the records or will the go straight to the next of kin . I only ask as they have both received letters from the M O D saying that they are dealing with the application and I have not. Any information will be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Kim

if the person died over 25 years ago you can get full records
if they died less than 25 years ago you get a one page break down of their service

you do not have to be next of kin to apply
if you applied they should go to you

Apply for the records of someone who's deceased
You can apply for a copy of someone else’s service records if any of the following apply:

    • you’re their immediate next of kin, for example their spouse or parent
    • you’ve got consent from their immediate next of kin
    • you have a general research interest - you’ll only have access to limited information, unless they died more than 25 years ago

    regards
    Clive

Thank you I wanted to make sure I got all the information so I went with the next of kin permission, both have died over 30 years ago

    Hi James
Both addresses, on the application for enquiries with consent of next of kin, they put their address. then in the in the part where it says...name of the person making the application... they put my name and address.
As I said before, it just seemed strange that they both received letters from the m o d when its me who has applied for them.

    Regards

Sorry Kim but, at risk of seeming facetious, the Law of Universal Cussedness ensures that, given a choice, they will almost certainly pick the wrong one. Also, as each £30 fee is only supposed to cover the admin costs of one set, I would realistically regard it as folly to expect any duplication of acknowledgement.

What's more, on the subject of jobsworth attitudes and only getting what you pay for, our forum advisers often stress the importance of making sure not to risk being short-changed - a recent example being, "Ask for ALL file information to ensure you get all they have, sometimes they may have more than one file, so worth checking."

Kim over 25 years you dont require next of kin permission and should get the full records
You should have just put your details in as per the instructions on the web site

Clive with hindsight I agree with you, the forms where filled in correct with Next Of Kin consent form, they asked for N O K address and applicants address if different.

Thank you all for taking the time to help me, I will let you know what happens

    Hi All
Got an email back from a lady at the Historical Disclosures Dept, saying one of the service records has been amended and I have also received a letter of acknowledgment.
Apparently someone else will contact me regarding the other service record.
Now I just have to wait another 5 months to see if I actually do get them.
Once again I would like to thank Clive James and Steve for all your help and advice.

    Regards

Ooh, er - I hope you mean your request for it rather than the record itself as the latter would imply Minitrue-style evidential tampering !

And I hope your PR contact's faith in her 'worker bee' colleagues' ability to actually deliver on her promise is justified in light of the old truism that "Happiness is a scapegoat" - or what my old dad would call 'duckshoving' (not simply 'passing the buck' but hurriedly ducking down whilst shoving a 'hot potato' across onto some poor unsuspecting colleague).

    And I certainly hope Clive's optimism proves justified but, to finally quote the late great Terry Pratchett's Discworld Noir in my defence;
"Pessimism is a term used by optimists
to attempt to discredit those who see the world as it really is.
    "

    Rambling on as ever,
    Steve :)

    Hi Clive
    will keep you updated

    Hi Steve
After reading your post I began to get doubtful, so I rang them up and spoke to the person who is dealing with the second service record. He was very nice and while I was on the phone he asked me for a name and address of where I wanted the records sending , I told him my address and he said that he had already found the records, but they are back logged and are just sending out those applications from September.
So a few months to wait

    Regards

    Kim

Sorry for any unnecessary alarm, Kim, but yours is great news if true. I usually find it best to resolve tricky problems fully-interactively by 'phone but couldn't give you a # to ring having mislaid my notes of some for MoD Glasgow I had found squirreled away in some website corners so obscure that they may have even inspired Douglas Adams' famous description of 'publicly displaying' a key planning proposal in a locked filing cabinet &c !

    Be lucky,
    Steve

    Hi All
Just a quick update, I have received 1 of the two service records . It came Christmas Eve so that was a nice surprise . He was a Gunner in the Royal Artillery. I am thinking of maybe getting in touch with the Royal Artillery Museum, to see if they have any more information on his Battalion, war diaries etc, and if they can give more insight into his service records. It is quite hard to understand

    Steve
No worries ,thanks for spurring me on

    Regards

You might be better posting an image of the service record on this site - there are people here who are good at translating these.

I’d second the advice re sharing his papers on the forum. RA Museum will likely charge for any assistance they may be able to provide and will take ages to respond where members response will be almost immediate and free gratis!

Several members here will be able to source his Regiment (no Battalion in RA) War Diary via National Archives.

    Steve

    PS

Don’t forget to use the forum search. His unit may have been mentioned previously.
