Hi, The eminent historian Sir Michael Howard has died today aged 97yrs. He served 3rd CG in the Italian Campaign and was awarded the MC for his bravery at Salerno, September 1943. He completed his studies at Oxford post war and had a long career as an academic and military history author. He co authored the official 1920/46 Regimental History. MC citation courtesy of Diane. Sad news, he was a fine historian. His classic book about the Franco-Prussian War was one of the first adult military histories I read as a kid.
I used it in grad school and thought it an excellent work. Informative and well written which is rarer in academic works than it should be. His contributions will be missed.
Also read his book about the Franco-Prussian War (bought his book instead of Wawro's and haven't regret that decisions) ... may he R.I.P.
Possibly with access to the celestial archives, busy writing a new version of Milton's history of the Great Rebellion.
I read his review of a book on the FPW, probably Wawro's. He began by saying that as the author of a book on the same subject he had been worried when he heard that such an eminent historian was writing a rival work. He then said that he was right to be concerned as the new book was excellent. RIP
If imperial defence policy from 1900 to 1942 is your interest I can recommend Professor Howard’s ‘The Continental Commitment’ – only published by Penguin Books in paperback in 1972 I believe. It was substantially based upon the series of lectures he gave in Oxford for the prestigious Ford Lectures in 1971.
