Reviving this old thread because of a whole page article in today's Times. Go have look here: For Yorkshire’s chuffin’ Nazis, ze war is over Ron
The German dressing-up thing seems to be upsetting the media again - This time the poor old MVT are taking the brunt over 'Lacock at War'. Nazi items sold on National Trust land A rather confused female of the species came over all hot and bothered and stated ;- "My descendants are from Europe, and although I don't know by name who perished, I am sure members of my family did die in the Holocaust." Her as-yet unborn ancestors will no doubt fully support her in this. Personally, I feel no need whatsover to see Third Reich reenactors, but they're part and parcel of almost every event.
Not mortally offended by anything that you saw then Owen ? Not even by the recentish Russian motorcycle pretending to be a BMW ?
Sick of seeing old men wearing old uniforms, why not wear a tank instead? Passed this place on Saturday: Military Vehicles For Sale - Tanks, CVR(T), FV432, Chieftain Tank I was in a German motor car so got out of there fast...
Like it Steve. I see they have a Chieftan with activated main gun for sale. That could be useful. And a nice little Ferret for the wife to do the shopping. Tim
I've nothing against re-enactment providing the spirit is right (and it's done well), but the endless staged b&w vignettes that clog up my search results are really starting to get my goat. We've got to the point with the units/formations that I try to research online where it's easier to find images that are re-enactments than genuine vintage photographs--and this goes for all search engines and most social media.
Couldn't agree more. Watermark it before putting online. It's a compliment to the gear assembled, posing & photographic skill, but it's also damned annoying.
One up the Spout. Many years ago I went back to the Army Cadets as an adult. I was told by the "Old Sweats" that My Skill at Arms was very good as was my rifle drill with a No 4 Lee Enfield so was put forward for a Cert A Part one test just like I had done as a lad (I also completed Part 2). I should have no problem. BUT I was tested by the Cadet Training Team of regular soldiers. We went through the load procedure. I checked that the weapon was clear. Questions: why is the Magazine still on the rifle? Loaded 10 rounds in two clips. Then pressed the rounds in the magazine down and carefully placed one up the spout and closed the bolt applying the safety catch, FAILED. The guys who did it for real were WRONG. But then there was a war on. I bet the old guys who set me up were wetting themselves with laughter in the Sgts. Mess. With all the drill changes it must be very difficult to get it correct to the time that is being re enacted. Like the Battle of Bosworth when they all get up afterwards!
Took a mate to an English Civil War reenactment in Worcestershire decades ago. He didn't really understand how it worked, & that our side was to be wiped out at the end; so, threatened by multiple 'enemies' and with all his side 'dead', engaged in desperate full-contact Kung Fu (his real interest). Don't think spinning kicks, joint locks & Wushu with a captured halberd were ever in Barriffe's drill manuals but it was highly entertaining to watch. Had to resurrect myself & stop him after the first knockout. The crowd seemed to enjoy it...

About ten years ago I visited the Living History event at Kelmarsh. Re-enactors covering over 20 centuries of history. There is a huge value in tryuing to udnerstand how people lived and fought in ancient conflicts. I did have a problem with the re-enactor dressed as a German WW2 officer who was explaining in a very sympathetic way Hitler's views about the jews to children and how Hitler knew nothing about the holocaust.
