    Sharon.

In case you had not worked it out, your grandfather served in 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (2 NF). 2 NF were the Divisional Machine Gun Battalion for 4th Infantry Division and that would place him at the Fourth Battle of Monte Cassino in May 1944.

Did he ever mention being at this gargantuan event in the war?

    Regards

  2. My grandad died in 1959 at the age of 49 so I never got to meet him. I wish I had. Did he serve with the 2 RNF for the whole of his career??

From his records you posted earlier I would say 'Yes' from 1939 through to 26 Sep 1945

Its possible but as the records posted basically only cover his WW2 service what he did between 1928 and 1939 I have no idea, do you have more documents to post - by the way can you post them so they are the right way, with arthritis in my neck its hard to turn myself upside down

  7. Sorry. Complete novice at this. I have his attestation papers which state he enlisted in 1928 to the RNF.

I can see he originally enlisted 13/8/1928 (born 13/8/1910) and that he 'Rejoined from Reserve' 15/8/39 , but it doesn't tell you what he did in between those dates - or at least those details have not yet been posted.
The statement rejoined from resereve would indicate that he served for a while from 1928, then left the Army but was put on reserve and recalled in 1939 from whatever he was doing - I cant find him on the 1939 Register I have access to but that doesnt mean anything

Would your relative have given up? - no - just check the images for clarity before up loading - you have done it before in post no 20 - you can do it again

    Hi,

I can only make out detail in one of the forms in your post #20. The out of focus forms may help in identifying his pre War Battalion.

I can see he served in Jamaica 1931/34 but not which Battalion he was with.

Northumberland Fusiliers became Royal Northumberland Fusiliers in 1935.

    Sharon,

a small piece of advice re these A3 scans, get you hands on a A3 scanner instead of trying to take a photo on your phone ( you will be banging your head against the wall!) Ask them to print them off to A4 size. You may have one at work?

You may also like to try & obtain The History of the ROYAL NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS 1919-1945 Brigadier C.N. Barclay, C.B.E., D.S.O. Published for the Regimental History Committee, William Clowes and Sons Ltd. Do shop about & don't buy the first one you come across. It is a good detailed history. If you can get one for about £40.00 ish, or less? Then that's a good price in my eyes.
2 NF cover quite a few chapters.

    Regards
    Stu.

    Hi,

Good suggestion from Stu but you could also consider trying your local library. They ought to be able to get a copy via an inter library loan - or if you are based in or near Newcastle the Central Library will almost certainly have a copy in their reference section (likely for read only on site so you won’t be able to take it home).
