Where is he buried etc. The Battalion arrived back in the UK at 1600hrs on the 31st May. They were at Tidworth on the 1st June.

Wonder if they were on a ship that sunk?

Leubringhen is miles from Dunkirk-between Boulogne and Calais.

From The Story of the 2nd Battalion The Sherwood Foresters 1939-1945 by Capt Masters

Events at this stage were terribly confused. No one knew the complete whereabouts of the enemy, who was infiltrating and by-passing the flanks. A company was detached from the Battalion and formed by Brigade into 'Templeforce', under command of Major N S Temple, MC (Foresters). This band of men subsequently guarded a sector of the Dunkirk perimeter during the evacuation of the Division, and the gallant Major Temple was killed.

I'll do some more digging for you.

    Morning,

The man is Private 4970453 Vickerstaff, as in Owen's reply above.

He is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial on Column 95.

Although from Leek, Staffordshire, he married and settled in Walsall.

Many thanks for the replies, hopefully the answer is out there,

    many thanks, Drew,

    Graeme

I think there is a possibility that the dates of death maybe wrong. Some of them may have died on the 31st May IMO. That said I'm quite confident with the info I have (which isn't a lot) that your man was part of 'Templeforce' under Major Temple MC. The rest of the Bn was sent to 5 Div a few days earlier and didn't return to 1 Div until they were back in the UK. I suspect the casualty buried at LEUBRINGHEN was with the main Bn when they were attached to 5 Div.

I thought I had some info on Templeforce in a couple of books but all I can find so far is a couple of mentions to the unit in 3 Bde's war diary posted below. I'm still looking....

Hi Ben - That's a kind offer. I'm only interested in the 1940 France and Flanders part if you have more than what is in the book.
