Good Evening Am looking for recommendations on the best book to buy on the landings at Salerno and the subsequent battles. I had an uncle who fought and died there with 64 Fd Regt R.A. Thanks Derek Lo
Welcome Derek If you can supply more detail and im sure forum members will assist you further Assume you have his service records and war diaries British units involved in Salerno Landings Regards Clive
Use the site search facility - we also have a thread on books - What are you reading at the moment? might be something in there TD
The following two are US centric books, but which also look at the involvement of British Forces, to a degree: CMH Publications Catalog - SALERNO TO CASSINO CMH Publications Catalog - SALERNO: AMERICAN OPERATIONS FROM THE BEACHES TO THE VOLTURNO, 9 SEPTEMBER-6 OCTOBER 1943 You can also look at: Salerno 1943, Angus Konstam, Pen & Sword, 2007 (ISBN: 978-1-84415-517-0) Operation Avalanche: The Salerno Landings, 1943, Des Hickey & Gus Smith, Heineman, 1983 (ISBN: 9780434391806) The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944 (The Liberation Trilogy Book 2), Rick Atkinson, Thorndike Pr, 2014 (ISBN: 978-1410463869)
This is a bit of a bargain, even for the reprint: MEDITERRANEAN AND MIDDLE EAST VOLUME V: THE CAMPAIGN IN SICILY 1943 AND THE CAMPAIGN IN ITALY 3rd September 1943 TO 31st March 1944 Part One: Amazon.co.uk: Brigadier C J. C. Molony: 9781847346940: Books It will serve as an overview from the British perspective. You can sometimes pick up an original hardback edition for a sensible price as well.
For a general view Italy's Sorrow. A year of War 1944-45 James Holland Harper Press. More specific Salerno Eric Morris Hutchinson.
You should be able to obtain a copy of the book below for a good price. I'm thinking of obtaining a copy myself. Salerno Remembered by G. Curtis. Published in 1988, by the Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment Association in Canterbury. 172pages, 30 black & white plates & 9 maps. I'm sure a forum member will vouch for this book if he reads this thread? Even at its most expensive it seems rather cheap. Regards, Stu.
The OCMH books on Salerno are available on line on the OCMH website CMH Publications Catalog - SALERNO TO CASSINO CMH Publications Catalog - SALERNO: AMERICAN OPERATIONS FROM THE BEACHES TO THE VOLTURNO, 9 SEPTEMBER-6 OCTOBER 1943 Edit: already given above by BFBSM ...
I meant to add this book also, it is a very interesting read and assisted me with understanding a great deal on the activity during the invasion and the following days. It is highly recommended. Mark
