    Hi,

He likely joined Palestine Police pre 1939 after he went on to Regular Army Reserve but he would've been liable for "recall to the colours" on the outbreak of war.

The answer will be in his service papers.

My Fathers Uncles and Father seem to like using Names willy nilly Like George Chesson was known as Sid. Frank has J not H as his second initial sometimes. That just leaves the third brother Ron Chesson who was 18 when he joined up at the beginning of the war. For some reason he joined the Irish Fusiliers. But cannot find the name Chesson, R or otherwise :army:

Thank you all again, I feel more confident now I have some information to base my questions and requests on.

Bear in mind that you do not need any service details to apply for service records, just name and date of birth. In this case you don't need a death certificate as he was KIA, I would include a copy of the CWGC certificate with the application forms.

Hiya, could someone enlighten me please :)
What does 503 on the wounded list above mean. I have only found abbreviations, not a sniff of a number code :D

Handwritten Codes on Casualty List Records - Solved

They are the numbers given to lists compiled by War Office for publication in newspapers.

I believe my great uncle was wounded on 20.10.42 as he on a list that one of this sites members found for me.
my question is, do these list tell you what his injury's are and his location when injured?
My biggest problem is when I look at these list I'm really not sure what I am looking at.
Is there a format for forms or reports in the ww2 documents?

Unfortunately they won't give details of the injury, they do give a Theatre (Italy, N W Europe etc) for the injury but not a specific location - from his unit and the date it should be possible to narrow down a location though

I've merged your recent thread with the previous one on which he 1942 casualty list was posted, in the hope that it refers to the same great uncle.

Can you please keep to one thread per individual. It can get confusing and frustrating for folks trying to help you if they can't see info already shared.

From what I can see 1st Buffs seems to have been with 8th Armoured Brigade in 10th Armoured Division and on 24/10/42 were in the 2nd Battle of El Alamein

    Hi there,
I've merged your two accounts into one as dual ones causes confusion.
Give me a shout if you'd rather be Crankie, Rodbender, or Crankie-Rodbender.
    Cheers,

    Palestine police or army ?

My great uncle Sgt. FH Chesson served in Palestine before the war.
Would he have been regarded as a policeman or soldier ?
He was in the Buffs at the time. As usual can't find out much about what or where he was.
Can anyone suggest some key words that would possibly improve my chances of finding the things I am looking for?
Thank you for looking at this post.
