Royal Warwickshire Regiment cap badge 5110805 Pte. T. CARPENTER

Discussion in 'Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy' started by Maureen Roberts, May 12, 2019.

  1. I am seeking assistance to find out the name of a soldier of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, whose WW2 cap badge has been found in Comines Belgium,

A friend who lives in Warneton - Comines has contacted me to assist him in locating family members so the badge can be returned to the soldiers family and learning of the fate of the soldier The badge has the soldiers service number 511080 engraved on it and it was found at the Comines- Ypres where the regiment fought on 26, 27 and 28 May 1940

A check of the names of those of the regiment who died in the battle and are buried at the COMINES (KOMEN) COMMUNAL CEMETERY indicates that his service number is not among them

Military records post 1920 are not accessiable on line and as I do not have the name of the soldier nor can I provide a death certificate or permission of the next of kin as required by the MOD
I live in Perth Australia and I have been helping Belgium and French families who adopt the graves of Australian and New Zealand soldiers to locate living families of the deceased.

    Thanks

I suspect that this is going to be difficult. The six-digit number that you quote falls within a block issued to cavalry (he could have transferred after enlistment).

The Royal Warwicks. block was 5094001 - 5172000. Might there be a seventh digit at the end ? There are 7 casualties from May 1940 from the regiment whose numbers begin 51108**

    Hello Maureen,

I agree with Rich, the strong likelihood is that there is one digit missing, or which cannot be read on the badge. Good luck going forward and I love that people are trying to find the owner of the badge even at this late stage.

Might be also worth uploading an image of the cap badge - just to check it out and be doubly sure

  5. Thank you I will ask the finder if he can see any more numbers

  6. I have asked for him to send me photos so I can up load

  7. Yes, it is great that there are people who care enough to return items found on the battle friend to the owners or their family. There is a Frenchman Phillippe Clerbout from Auchy Les Mines who fossicks with a metal detector and has been able to return identifiable items to the US Canada and Australia from WW1 and WW2

  8. Thank you for that advice I agree it is difficult but still with in the realms of possibilty

There are results for service number 51108?? as Far East POW's - if he survived Dunkirk (ie just lost his badge) he could have been shipped to the Far East

Thanks to Guy for helping me see the errors of my ways re the numbers - seem to having digit problems today

  17. I have located a neice with a tree on Ancestry .com I have sent her a message. Thomas Carpenter died 10 March 2019 around the time his cap badge was found near the canal in Belgium. He did marry but it seems he had no children and he outlived all of his siblings. His neice had this photo of Thomas on the right in the POW Camp in Poland

  18. Good news I have now been contacted by his niece and Thomas two sisters are still alive. One is almost 100 years old lives in the UK and the and the other who is 93 lives in the US. The finder of the badge is on holiday in Greece so he hasn't learnt about finding the family as of yet.
