Is that an advert for a new reality TV show ........................ might watch that one "Chindit Interceptors" - catchy?? TD
If you have to wade through a sea of anything on Twatter, it's because you've chosen to follow people producing it, or to open threads that contain the random internet. Criticising what you see on there seems a bit like blaming the telephone because you phoned someone annoying. I dislike the people that run it, and their right-on curated suggestion lists, but the people you follow, and thus the feed you see, are/is picked/created entirely by the user. My incoming tweets to read are 70% military/history stuff, mixed in with people that make me laugh or think (sometimes think 'Christ, what a loony!', while laughing.) Following over 1100 accounts, and never felt anything was ever forced upon me. Muted many that go bad/boring, & un-muted many that recover. It's a link/picture-feed, news, & entertainment system. Not great at depth (saving 'ThinkDefence' creating the world's leading resource on pallets), but handy for fast info exchange & contact. It's only the internet. Nobody's obliged to use any website. Just wondered what people's usernames might be. No less, no more.
Thought occurs: If the wading comes when first setting up. Go slowly. Check profiles before following. Stick to interests. Never take it personally. I followed a load of crap accounts at first, confused & trying to be polite to people following me. Nobody sane cares if you follow them or not. Ditch the daft & move on. Got a decent WW2 project that I can share out to now almost 13k more-likely-to-be-interested people? (they chose to follow a WW2 account) Tweet it at @ ww2talk. Most of my output on there is RTs. Signal amplification.
That's a good thought. I will certainly follow ww2talk And it would be a great way to share people's projects!
For what it's worth, if I had to access twitter using their website all the time or their official app, I think I would "go spare". I use a third party Android app called Talon... it's not the best, but it DOESN'T SHOW ADS and it shows tweets in chronological order. Twitter is so dumb.
It's pretty dreadful as a means of conversation or communication, but it has its uses. The only reason I signed up (same name as here, will now follow ww2talk if I can figure out how) was to contact three users who had posted about having relatives who served with 1/4th Essex during the war. Two of them replied to my messages with good info, so I'm not writing it off as a medium. The negative, for me, is that it's absolutely loaded with people who do not understand politics passing round vacuous nonsense about politics--even more so than Facebook. Edit: am 'following' ww2talk.com on Twitter now. It's a bit rubbish: I've been scrolling for several minutes and they don't mention 4th Ind Div once...
And immediately a gent replies that he's writing a book including them. This is where Twatter shines. Among the ordure, there can be pearls. And the ordure is easily swept aside. Unless it's funny shit.
Top Tips. Don't follow people with 'history' in their username. Usually because they're not very good at it and then block you when you point out they're talking a load of bollocks. Don't tweet about banning people or stuff either. Taking the piss out of the pompous is good way to spend time on Twitter.
Another truth: The more smilies & hashtags in the user name or bio, the more utterly batshit the account will likely be.
