Sorry about that Mr. L. I made the post and then promptly forgot about it. I think it was used to move a lifeboat about after the war, IIRC.

Spidge, have you tried to view Tobruk. Most outposts and the tank ditch are still visible.

As part of the celebrations of the Battle of the Somme in 1916, I created the files so you can discover the different places of the fighting, as well as the various places of memories for tablets or phones.
The files work on Google Earth and Maps too.

I wish you in advance a stay in the Somme and I hope the files will help you in your visit.

The SS Richard Montgomery in the Thames Estuary cannot be viewed on Google Earth! However, the Mulberry Harbour aground in the area can be seen.

Also, an anti submarine boom at East Beach, Shoeburyness.

In the late 1980', early 1990's I went to a security exhibition in Norwich on behalf of Essex Police Crime Prevention as they were considering cctv coverage in Southend-on-Sea. The reason for it being in Norwich was this company had just installed cctv there.
It was fascinating. They showed how motorway cameras could be set for number plate recognition (this was years before the ANPR cameras began to be used by the Police) to search for a particular vehicle. They also demonstrated the cameras taking an oblique view of a passing car and the computer technology was able to 'turn' the number plate so it could be viewed directly. The technology available today to some agencies must be fantastic.

......according to Google Earth the SS Richard Montgomery is currently closed but it does provide a useful (sic) telephone number. Curious?

    Her Majesty's Coastguard, apparently.

Google's mapping tools have got much shinier since this thread started.
Must look into a 'WW2Talk Map' again.
Still got all the KMZ/KML files somewhere.
Started a while back, but gave up as it was awkward to control contributions. Need to find a way to allow members to add to it, or a bit pointless.
Embedding was quite crude a few years back. Might have improved and allow some way to place within this site for members to use.
    Might not.
    Might be a plugin.
(Ah, 2F had a member map, didn't it...)
    Hmmm.
