    Stirling III EH933

Took off from Swinderby for a night cross-country. While flying at high altitude just inland from the south coast of Devon, a sudden and terrible disaster overtook the crew and their aircraft dropped from the sky breaking apart as it fell, At 0004 hrs the fuselage and most of the mainplane crashed onto a hillside at Coppleham Cross, north of Exton and a mere six miles SSE from the city of Exeter. Debris was recovered from along a path stretching three and a half miles eastwards from the main impact point and A.I.B specialists later determined that the rear fuselage had detached at around 14,000 ft followed circa 10,000 - 11,000 ft by the elevators and rear turret.

Just to update this with regards to Richard Street.

Along with Richard, my great-uncle John Kerry was part of the crew of Stirling EH 933. I've seen a copy of the official accident report into the crash on the night of 26/27 January 1944, which describes the circumstances as the aircraft being heard in the vicinity of Winsford, then turning south east with engines spluttering before crashing at Bridgetown, Exton, Devon.

I am currently investigating the possibility that the crash actually occurred in Somerset - on Exmoor - where there is another Exton (not far from the Devon/Somerset border) - in close proximity to Bridgetown and Winsford (and Coppleham Cross, although I have not yet seen an official document which mentions this name).

I have had some communication with people local to the Somerset Exton, and there are indeed recollections of a plane crash during the war.

I am not yet in a position to say conclusively that this is the location, but I do believe there is a possibility that Devon was recorded in error some 71 years ago. Wherever the investigation takes me, it would be nice if a plaque could commemorate the names of the airmen who gave their lives that night - which might be of interest to any of Richard's family who are out there.

    Hi Robert
I am researching the Street Brothers becasue I am a member of the Berkhamsted History Society, where they are buried. Did you find a conclusion regarding the location of Exton? I would like to make sure my facts are correct.

    Hi Janice.

The evidence I have collected, viewed in its entirety, points to Stirling EH933 crashing on the hill above Bridgetown, just south of Exton in Somerset (Exmoor). Bill Chorley (Bomber Command Losses) was kind enough to concur with my findings, and I am waiting to hear back from the International Bomber Command Centre at Lincoln.

There is currently a plan in place to erect a memorial to the crew of the Stirling - of which Richard Street was a member - at Bridgetown.

I have tracked down some surviving relatives of the crew, and would like to find someone connected with Richard, but he and his brother appear to have been single, and I am not aware of any other siblings. (I posted on the Berkhamsted Local History & Museum forum on Facebook a few weeks ago).

A while ago I sent for Richard’s RAF record, and hopefully this will give me the story of his RAF career and how he came to be the tail gunner that night, although there will be no personal info divulged on the form.

If you are aware of any relatives, or have any local info to add, I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Bob, thank you for the reply. I only started researching Richard and his brother yesterday but I agree neither married and there were no other siblings. I'll see what else I can find, there mother did remarry in 1950. I'm new to this, is there a way we can talk without filling the forum?

I notice they only show one child, presumably Peter as its 'private' - be interesting to see what they say.

I have often contacted trees with details from the site and they have no idea that the person existed, they only use details that Ancestry throws at them to make their tree.

There are 13 WW2 CWGC graves in Berkhamsted Cemetery but only 5 of them feature on the War Memorial. I'm reasearching all 13 at the moment so may have some more questions:)
