Does anyone have any info on 14 FDS, RAMC? I'm trying to retrace my grandfathers footsteps during the war. Many thanks

Royal Army Medical Corps, Infantry Division, 1944 43 Infantry Division: 129 Field Ambulance 130 Field Ambulance 213 Field Ambulance 14 Field Dressing Station 15 Field Dressing Station 38 Field Hygiene Section So I would guess if you followed the route of the 43rd Inf Division - 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division - Wikipedia then thats roughly the route he followed TD
Hi, I am researching my fathers time in the RAMC, and his route through Europe after the Invasion. He was called Albert Wallace, and was in 14 Field Dressing Station. We recently found a partial list of places on the route to Hamburg, but the names seem to be written phonetically, I presume there were no road signs, and were just told where they were! Gradually finding my way, but the spellings are very different at times, and Google does not always point you in the right direction. His number was 7394707 if that helps. Please be patient, I have just started this!
Hi Firstly - do you have his service records? if not then it is important to obtain them before you go any further, as they will confirm all the units he was in, when he was in them and where in the world he was at those times, the link for those forms (they can ONLY be obtained from the MOD) is Request records of deceased service personnel He may have been based in 14 Field Dressing Station but that was just a dressing station and not a 'unit' TD
Thank you for the prompt reply and advice TD. No I do not have his service records, but will be applying for them in the next few days. As my father died in 1974, and my mother in 1994, will I be classed as Next of Kin by the MoD? Also, is there just one fee of £30 to pay, I had a quick look last night and it was a little confusing, but thats probably me and a late night. Thank you again for your help, it is much appreciated, and I will keep the forum informed of my progress/results. Ian
You are next of kin, but a £30 fee is payable per application, you will also need a death certificate (or copy of one at least) You need to fill in one form that explains who you are and why you are applying, the second form will be about your relative TD
As your father died more than 25 years ago being "next of kin" is irrelevant, anyone can apply for the service records. No next of kin consent is required. £30 has to be paid except for "the spouse or civil partner of the subject at the time of death (or parent if there was no spouse or civil partner)". Richard
Thank you very much Richard and TD, again wonderfully prompt replies, and great advice. I'm new to this part of genealogy, so very grateful for your help. Ian
Is a photocopy of my fathers Death Certificate acceptable when applying for his Service Record, or is a proper official copy from the Register Office needed?
https://assets.publishing.service.g...ce_details_general_enquirers_pt1_v6.1__1_.pdf • Unless the individual died in Service, you are required to provide a copy of a death certificate as proof of death before a request can be accepted. However, if the date of birth of the individual was more than 116 years ago, the requirement to provide a death certificate will be waived. In some circumstances, MOD may contact you if a death certificate is required. TD
Thank you TD, not quite 116 years, born 1910, died 1973, but neither my brother or myself seem to have the Death Certificate, so I will have to apply for a copy anyway. Thanks again for your help.
Forms filled in, copy of Death Certificate found and included, sent them off, now just hoping they find something. Thank you for your help, I will post results when they return, and I have digested them!
From my collection of higher formation War Dairies from May 45 there are only two references to 14 Field Dressing Station RAMC, on the 9 May 45 order of battle for HQ 12th Corps (so Hamburg fits) and HQ 8th Corps District showing a disbandment order was issued for 8 Apr 46, sorry no locations or any other details Best of luck with your research https://britisharmyingermany.com (under construction)
Hi Albert10... Apologies I haven't been on here for some time. Before we went into lockdown earlier this year I visited the National Archives and started to transcribe the War Diary for 14 FDS. I have it in a word document if you'd like. I've tried to capture as many locations as I could but Major Clarkes handwriting was a little challenging at times. How do I attached a word document here?
