Dear Sirs, I am trying to find out more information, from the small bits of info that I've been told about one of my great Uncles. Herbert "Butty" E. North, born 5.6.1919 in Tempsford, Biggleswade District, joined the Royal Artillery, and it is said he served alongside the Gurka's in Burma, whilst in service with the Riyal Artillery. Herbert liked to play football, and played for the local football Team. I always remember, he was kind to me, and didn't marry. Butty died in August 1984, in Kettering, Northamptonshire. Any information, will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Linda
Hi, Welcome to the forum. I’m surmising you are in Australia but your starting point ought to be to apply for his service papers see below link - cost £30 + cost of a death certificate. They will give you details of the units he served in and once you know that you can look for the unit War Diaries. Thank you for this. Do you please know what the shorthand stands for: S / L. .. ? (FLD) .. is it field ? Thank you for speaking to me about this. Linda
Linda, Men transferred inbetween branches of the Royal Artillery. Herbert could have served within a Search Light unit which was disbanded and then he was transferred to a Field Regiment? All will be confirmed within his service records. Guy
Hi, Shot in the dark that may be a red herring but the 118/92 under his surname on the RA Attestation could mean he was in 118 Battery 92nd Field Regiment. I can find loads on internet re 92nd F R but nothing with a breakdown of the component batteries. 92 (5th London) Fd Regt - Kennington 1938 - Army Regt France 1939-40 - 5 Inf Div UK 1940-2 - 5 Inf Div India, Iraq, Persia, Syria 1942-3 - 5 Inf Div Mid East 1943 - 5 Inf Div Sicily 1943 - 5 Inf Div Anzio 1/44 - 5 Inf Div Italy 1943-5 - 5 Inf Div ‡ NW Europe 1945 - 5 Inf D Steve Y
This only lists the Batteries in 1939. RA 1939-45 92 Fld Rgt 3 Sep 39 365 (9th London), 368 (12th London)
Thank you, I admit, I know so little about his service. I am told by my father that Herbert and the Royal Artillery served in Burma, fighting alongside the Gurkhas. I'd love to know more .. but they never spoke about it. I know he went to Burma, if you have any info on that please ? Thank you Linda
Well that rules of the 92 Fd Regt idea. Maybe best wait for service records so we know exactly what unit he was with. Have you got any photos of him in uniform?
Sorry, I don't have any dressed in uniform, in service. I have found a photo of him, as he played football in the local football Team at Tempsford, where he grew up. Thank you for your information, it is very interesting. I am trying to research his story, and tell it for posterity. I think it is always nice to put a face to a name. Kind regards Linda
Hello, I thought I would look for a reference to the RA, where they fought in Burma. I came across this reference _ please see attached file below. I have kept the reference of where the info has been obtained, to cross reference where the info has been taken. It would be nice for me to find out which unit he served. etc. Thank you Linda
hello as mentioned in a previous post Get a copy of military service records - GOV.UK is the way to go regards Clive
Hello, So it looks like the RA, had units out in Burma. I will see if I can link any further... ? Thank you Linda
Thank you, I am interested in Herbert's story, and will get his records, hoping this will point me further. Thank you for your help. Linda
