Thomas Henry James had been discharged from the Army 6.7.1917 and received his Silver War badge on 13.8.1917.

 

Unusual to find CWGC cemetery all with the qualifying date graves without the standard CWGC tombstones......could be related to the then private estate.

It appears that all the casualties are in the CWGC data base.

Results

Marin Cochet appears to have been a French Canadian but born in the then French colony of Algeria.

Cliveden House..... 50 odd years ago....the Profumo scandal who brought down a government......site of swimming pool rollicking with John and Christine.... problem was he sharing her with a Russian attache.

During the war, the family gave permission for the garden to be adapted to serve as the final resting place for servicemen who died in the hospital. The mosaic paving was replaced with turf and the graves were marked with plain stones recumbent on the graves rather than the upright headstones that are familiar in other Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries.

Caversfield St Laurence near Aylesbury is on a private estate but all headstones are CWGC

 

Probably linked to the power and influence of the Astor family at the time and left to the discretion of the landowner,The Astor family determined the outcome as indicate in Post #13.In other situations apart from Church and Municipal burials the CWGC had to purchase or be granted the land for CWGC cemeteries to be established.

The forerunner to the CWGC was the Imperial War Graves Commission, created in May 1917,(the CWGC from 1960.)Then in 1920,the standard tombstone as we know it was introduced which involved extensive hand sculpturing.....one of its main principles of the Graves Commission was to adopt a standard tombstone.(Sometime ago I remember seeing an article on the CWGC's work which illustrated the conversion in the tombstone final product from hand sculpturing to an automatic process..a saving in production costs.)

I would say that the Cliveden War Cemetery is an example of graves with recumbent tombstones through an ad hoc arrangement,other CWGC cemeteries have similar arrangements where there were subsidence problems.

Well done Owen.To some degree the CWGC depend on feedback such as this from visitors.

I had a similar case which I reported to the CWGC of a Great War grave in Normandy which some clown had altered the casualty's name by peening her surname...possibly missed by the CWGC as the cemetery appeared to have few visitors but one would have thought it would be within the scope of the visits of the maintenance teams.

 

The supervisor teams are very stretched in the UK and should do a visit every 3 -4 years unfortunately this is now much much longer.
