The adult colouring book craze comes to 1940:

Thank you for the most kind thought but I may just pass on that one - it's probably just me but I simply don't 'get' adult colouring books - now, if they turn out to be cutaway drawings (thank you Eagle comic from way back when) that, of course, would be another story!

I have pre-ordered the MMP photo book though so ,again, my thanks for that one.

    Cheers

"Eagle," the thinking boys comic and which encouraged me, one day, to become a Technical Illustrator!

Couldn't find this one using the search but 'The Road to Bordeaux' by C. Denis Freeman and Douglas Cooper is a good read. Two Englishmen who were in Paris in early 1940 and joined a French Army ambulance unit. Describes the chaos of the retreat before they managed to get back to the UK. Published in 1942.

    Currently reading these two books:
    [IMG] [IMG]

Both men were members of 613 Squadron in 1940, Rowland as Pilot Officer, Wilf Bickley as a Corporal AG
They flew on the mission to Calais when 613 went to support the BEF with their Hawker Hectors.
613 Sqn ops over Calais May 1940

One of the lesser known episodes of the campaign but one that has always fascinated me.

Thanks, I've pre-ordered. Some nice images there. I wonder if the author has ever visited this sub-forum ? It would be hard work to identify all the locations without the local knowledge and groundwork that has been put in on here.

    A Brief Review

Firstly let me state that this book is not an operational history of the type. Its combat use in France and immediately after is covered but not in as much detail as Valiant Wings. What this book is is a study of RAF policy, particularly bomber and army support, from the mid thirties up to early 1940, using the Fairey Battle as a case study. Initally intended to be part of the strategic bomber campaign, the Battle became a tactical bomber by default, doing a mission it wasn't originally intended for because there was no other type capable of filling the role. Using mostly primary sources, the author examines the infighting within the RAF and the interservice squabbling that ultimately led to the massacre of the Battle squadrons in France. The RAF brass do not come off looking very good in this book but the author is quick to point out, it was the frontline crews, making the best of a bad situation, that paid the ultimate price. A good book for those interested in the evolution of the RAF, its relations with the Army and the devlopment of strategic bombing but if you're looking for campaign history, you're better with Franks' book.

Seem to be on a bit of a 1940 binge right now. Just got this book, which gives a look at a RE company in France.
