Thanks for the link to the war diary, Owen.

The death of Private William Briggs in France was history repeating itself.

On 21 March 1918 his father, Driver William Briggs, Royal Field Artillery, was killed in action while serving in the Arras sector. He has no known grave, William Briggs (Snr.) is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, although his CWGC does not provide any 'Additional infomation', such as his N.O.K. or his hometown.

This is the CWGC commemoration for William Briggs (Snr.):

    Name: BRIGGS, WILLIAM
    Rank: Driver
    Service No: 11970
    Date of Death: 21/03/1918
Regiment/Service: Royal Field Artillery, "D" Bty. 10th Bde.
    Panel Reference: Bay 1.
Memorial: ARRAS MEMORIAL. Pas de Calais

William Briggs (Snr.) and William Briggs (Jnr.) are both commemorated on the Arlecdon Village War Memorial.

    "Like father, like son".

    Not forgotten.

    Harkness,

Thank you for the 1939 Register entry details. I have copies of 3456306 William Briggs service record, short though it is, as well as the casualty list and grave registration documents together with a PDF copy of his formal will. He originally enlisted in 1940 in the 2/8 Lancashire Fusiliers (Territorial Forces) and from there he went to the 1st South Lancashire Regiment.

    Thanks once again.

Willliam Briggs (Snr.) was my great-uncle and brother to my grandfather, John Briggs.
The CWGC is in error in that his regiment was actually: Royal Field Artillery, "D" Bty. 160th (Wearside) Bde.

    Hello David,
If you have original documentation about the correct battalion of your Gt Uncle you could send this to the CWGC and they may correct the error. Good luck.
