Is there a FAQ or style guide on tagging threads correctly?
Main thing I'm wondering about is anglicisation of non-English words, such as Fuhrerbunker as opposed to Führerbunker, would a tag using a plain u show up on a search for a Germanic ü?

Fascianting stuff I'm sure you'll agree...

Only very basic coverage of tags in the FAQ I'm afraid.

Just tested it and it seems that it is sensitive to umlauts etc.
A tag search using ü will not reveal results with a u - and vice-versa

The normal text search doesn't seem to interrogate the tags. Though that may be down to some option or other. I'll check.

Perhaps better to use anglicised versions which might make the searches easier for most, rather than fumbling with remembering keyboard shortcuts.
However an auto-complete box pops up after three letters have been typed, so it may not matter as people can then just click that.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks and yes it does help, I'll stick to anglicised and, I assume, English terms rather than foreign (eg: Nuremburg rather than Nürnberg). Tags are a very interesting feature so it'd be a shame to get them wrong.

    cheers,

I am unable to add tags to threads, is it me or is this function disabled?

    TIA!

Something's not right with it mate.
Mods & Admins haven't been able to tag since the last upgrade.

Hmm, I wonder if ours now works if yours has stopped working...

    ...nope.

    I'll have a dig.

    Thanks Adam :)

Rachel, an Umlaut is the two dots above certain vowels in German, as in Führer, modifying the sound.

    Hiya Za Rodinu.. Thankyou..

    I just googled it , it's a sound shift thing isn't it.
I've seen the Umlauts before but didn't realise what they were called.
    Thanks again.

I'd like to remind everyone that you can add tags to threads, and the system will automatically suggest existing tags once you start typing in a few letters. You can add whichever you think most appropriate or helpful as a description of thread contents, so - war diary, citations, maps, bren, royal artillery, merchant navy, raf - that sort of thing. (They appear in lower case).

Doing so helps to find threads with particular themes; there is a tag option in the forum search function. It's also a handy way of calling up threads that are of particular interest to you in a theme. Naturally the more often they're applied, the better the search will be.

Adding tags can be done before submitting a new thread

Not sure where best to put this?

The Tags function appears to be well under-used, and can be a very useful tool. Have just started using them, on another Invision Forum. Well worth getting into the habit. You can Tag up to twenty times here. Input the tag you want, then a comma, then next tag etc.For example here are the results, so far of the " chindits | WW2Talk " Tag

I am sure you are correct. However there are probably people like me who do not know what a tag is or what it does. I followed your link but it did not make it any clearer.

    Thanks Mikky,
I've also found the system very handy.

    Hi Mike

if anyone starts a thread, there is the facility under the title box to add tags... so 21 Army Group, D Day, Royal Engineers, Orbats, ... that sort of thing, spaced by commas.

It means then if anyone uses the forum Advanced Search they can search for terms under Tags. Search Tags | WW2Talk

    tank casualties | WW2Talk

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way for anyone other than the original thread starter to use this. So, if anyone starts a thread, maybe they could try and think of something descriptive to add to tags, it only takes a moment.

Tagging also concentrates links to connected threads:
    Looking at that editable-by-all thing.

    Thanks.

Sounds very useful. I will try to master it. Is it then possible for the thread starter to go back and add tags?

    Mike.

    I really don't know, Mike.
Not a whole lot of option settings for me to adjust (that I've found so far  )

Yes. Just go to Full Edit then add as many tags as you want. If you were posting on, for example Juno beach
    perhaps add tags,
    juno beach | WW2Talk ,
    d-day | WW2Talk ,
operation overlord | WW2Talk, and any relevant units etc
