FITZGERALD, Lieutenant, THOMAS EDWARD, 137213. Reconnaissance Corps, R.A.C.. lost in H.M.S. Dragonfly 14th February 1942. Column 95.

Hello, TE Fitzgerald was my grandfather,I believe he was in the 5th Loyals 18th Reconnaissance unit.

I have just started researching to find out some more information about him.

My father was a new born baby when his father went off to war so never knew him and I remember myself as a child that no one ever talk about my grandfather only that he had died at sea in the Far East.

Recently before my mother passed away she gave me a beautiful black & white photograph of a very handsome young man in military uniform, by the regimental badge on his tunic i managed to trace his regiment to the Loyal Lancs.( He was from Great Crosby in Liverpool)

In the space of a couple of weeks of research, all I could find out was that he had died at sea on February 14th 1942, until last night I found a link on the "Roll of Honor" website that says he died on HMS Dragonfly and is commemorated at the Singapore memorial
This information I found on Roll of Honor Website

I also found a very interesting and detailed read about the lead up to HMS Dragonfly leaving Singapore on the night of February 13th 1942 and the men that where selected to evacuate to make there way to Australia to set up another regiment, some of these men where from the 18th Reconnaissance Corps (See the below link) The ship was bombed by the Japanese the next day February 14th 1942 of Indonesia with many either killed or ending up in POW camps for the rest of the war

    https://www.malayanvolunteersgroup....passenger_list_hms_dragonfly_january_2019.pdf

As I live in Asia and often travel to Singapore, on my next visit I shall go to the memorial to honor his memory.

If anyone should have any further information or know where I might find regarding Lieutenant T E Fitzgerald or the 5th Loyals 18th Reconnaissance unit. leading up to his arrival in Singapore I would be interested.

    Thank you
    Marc Fitzgerald

He wasn't in Recce but was in 3rd Carabineers. He was missing after a RA OP was overrun by the Japanese on the Silchar Track, south of Pt 5846. The Carabineers were operating there in support of 32 Brigade but I'm not sure why he was at the OP when it was overrun.
