My nephew is doing a school project and has chosen as his subject a soldier in the Yorkshire Yeomanry WW2. I believe they were the 9th KOYLI and would like an overview of their locations and actions please. Any help would be appreciated.

I know one member on here Richard Harrison has the KOYLI Regimental History.
Might be worth asking him if he could have a look.
All I can find is this.
    British Light Infantry Regiments

9 KOYLI (formerly the Queens Own Yorkshire Dragoons) was motorised.

When you do a search for 9 KOYLI on Geoff's Search Engine it gives the unit as

9TH THE QUEEN'S OWN YORKSHIRE DRAGOONS BN KOYLI.

They were at Anzio and in Italy 1944-45.

    Hope that helps?

    John,

The KOYLI history (Hingston, the 1919-42 Vol V Never Give Up) confirms that the Yorkshire Dragoons were known as 9 KOYLI for a while, but that's all it says so that isn't much help.

However, CWGC has 126 casualties listed as 9TH THE QUEEN'S OWN YORKSHIRE DRAGOONS BN, KING'S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY, so it was clearly the name under which they did most of their fighting.

Use this little beauty, stick 9 in the Unit Text field, select KING'S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY in the Regiment/Corps field and hit search...

    Old Ted -

Try this site as there is a reference to the 9th Batt KOYLI after El Alamein - and from there it will give you some background as to what they were up to at that time - scroll down to dec '42

Well you have some information on Wikipedia:

Queen's Own Yorkshire Dragoons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yorkshire Hussars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yorkshire Dragoons are also mentioned here:

CHAPTER 27 — The Fourth Day of Battle | NZETC

You can try to find this book in your local library, maybe you can find some information there:

    "FIGHTING TYKES":
The Yorkshire Regiments in World War II by Charles Whiting and Eric Taylor. Included are the histories of: the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry; the East Riding Yeomanry; the York and Lancaster Regiment; the Duke of Wellingtons Regiment; East Yorkshire Regiment; Green Howards; West Yorkshire Regiment

Dragoons, in their earliest days, were basically mounted infantrymen. In becoming a motor battalion, the Yorkshire Dragoons were perhaps going back to their roots.

    A few dates:
24/08/42 YORK DGNS joined 2 Armoured Brigade, 1 Armoured Division,
    19/12/42 Redesignated 9 KOYLI
22/06/43 9 KOYLI moved to 7 Motor Brigade, 1 Armoured Division
20/07/1943 7 Motor Brigade renamed 18 Lorried Infantry Brigade
05/10/1943 Infantry Brigade renamed 18 Infantry Brigade
05/10/44 9 KOYLI were reduced to a cadre under command 168 Infantry Brigade under 8 Army
    01/01/1945 168 Infantry Brigade disbanded

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone had come across Tpr. Tim Thomas in their research into the Queens Own Yorkshire Dragoons?
He served in "C" Squ. QOYD/KOYLI, ending up in RACorps at El Alamein where he was killed. Will upload a couple of photos of Granddad once I've found where I've put them!!! Thanks
